Young Frankenstein

A movie review by Danielle Kehrig

Overall the movie Young Frankenstein had its good points as well as the bad. Between the casting, the humor, and the ability of the cast to carry the humor, the movie at best is a good way to kill a boring Sunday afternoon.

The casting in this movie was by far the best, and most intriguing part of the movie. Gene Wilder, and the other actors, such as Madeline Kahn, Marty Feldman, Kenneth Mars, and Gene Hackman, together carry the entire movie. This is present throughout the movie when their individual acting abilities come together save us (the viewers) from being unbelievably bored, and annoyed by a script that screams copycat from not only the original Frankenstein, but also Son of Frankenstein.

Madeline Kahn's performance, especially towards the end of the movie, is a little too dramatic, but is still definitely one to take note of. Marty Feldman also helps to make the movie presentable by coming to the rescue of a scene more than once as the wisecracking Igor. Kenneth Mars also plays his character well as the Local Police Chief whose right arm is a mechanical fake, which causes even more humor in this movie. Gene Hackman also makes a somewhat of a surprise appearance as a blind man who is trying to serve the monster a meal, but can't seem to do so properly. These actors are the glue that hold together a movie that is less than intellectually thrilling, to say the least.

Another aspect of this movie is the continuous humor that seems to run amuck throughout. Though I will admit it will have you laughing at different points in the movie, a lot of the jokes fall far from mediocre, and would fall into the category of being considered a cheap joke. The jokes are pretty much divided  between good and bad, but one thing is for sure, every joke is surprising carried rather well by the cast.

Though this movie did have its good points, I found it hard to be amused by it. I thought that overall it was seriously lacking by today's standards. Back when it first came out, it may have been considered daring, but its humor is slightly above mediocre. That is why I am giving this movie 2.5 out of 5 stars. It receives 1 star for the humor, cheap as it maybe it is still presented well, and the other 1 and a half stars, purely, because of the cast.
