Why so many Hats?

During the Nineteenth Century, in Europe, people did not have the luxury of indoor plumbing.  To use the bath people used bed pans and emptied them from the window into the middle of the street that was used as a sewer system.  For this reason men of the time wore hats to cover their heads so to not get human excrement on it.  This started the tradition that it is rude for a man to wear their hat inside of buildings especially around ladies, for there would be human excrement on it.  The types of hats were top hats, crowned top hat, tall crowed hats with or without brims, and caps.
