In the 19th century young boys wore dresses just like their sisters.
These dresses could be quite elaborate. As boys grew older some
differences were made on the dresses such as less lace and frilly applique.
When boys reached the ages between 2 and 7 they were either kept in dresses
or put in kilts. Kilts are frock like garments which looked like girlish dresses
compared to suits with boyish jackets, or frock like
jackets worn over long trousers. Boys also wore frocks with knee-length or
below the knee pants. When boys went outside they wore hats. The most
common style of the hat was the broad-brimmed sailor hat with a ribbon
dangling down the back. |
