A bodice is the portion of the dress above the waist. It is a
stiffened garment with stays like a corset. It is fastened in the back
with buttons. This was worn by both boys and girls to develop straight
backs. Physician have said that the bodice was confining and that it
didn't let the muscles exercise. At age 11 girls were able to wear corsets
. Wearing these everyday would decrease your waist size by one inch per year.
Boys got to wear bodice kilts, which were two piece garments. Boys wearing
bodice kilts had to wear blouses because the shirt tails couldn't be tucked
into the kilt. |
