Letter from the Principal
Dear Carondelet Families,
The second semester is well under way. I hope you
have been enjoying this much-needed rain and the stark beauty of
winter.
February is busy with a wide gamut of events and
activities for our students. We will be starting online
registration using the new course catalog for 2010-2011. If
you haven’t had the opportunity to view the new website, please take
some time. It is our hope that you will be pleasantly surprised
with its user-friendly
features.
Class advisement is scheduled for the first three
weeks of this month. Please assist your daughter with this very
important activity. Read the course descriptions and review her
transcript. Selecting new classes is not for the faint of heart. Mrs.
Libby, Sr. Anne Eugene and Ms. Harris will be advising the girls and
answering questions that you or your daughter may have during this
time.
The Learning Expectation (LE) for February is “A
Carondelet student is a woman of healthy lifestyles”.
As always, please encourage your daughter to share with you how she is
experiencing this LE in her classes.
Our third Kairos is scheduled for this month as are
a couple Urban Plunges. Both are valuable spiritual activities for your
senior or junior students. Since February is Heart Month, we will be
sponsoring a Jump Rope for Heart activity on February 5 at lunch. All
students are invited to participate in this extracurricular event.
Our winter athletics are winding down and the
spring athletic tryouts are starting up. The Wednesday following the
Presidents’ Day weekend, we will be having a special schedule and prayer
service for Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season. This
is a dress uniform day as are all the Wednesdays in the school year.
Our Mother/Daughter Retreat is set for Sunday,
February 21. If you have not already signed up for this lovely half-day
retreat with your daughter, there is still time. Every CHS student is
invited to participate with her mother or other significant woman in her
life.
To close off the month, some of our performing arts
students will be participating in the musical “Grease” which will be
held in the De La Salle Theater. It promises to be lots of fun.
Thanks for continuing to send your good wishes,
questions, and comments. Thanks, too, for entrusting Carondelet High
School to educate your daughter.
Sincerely,
Teri Hurlbut, Ed. D.

From the Assistant Principal
Dear Parents:
It is time to prepare your daughter’s academic
schedule for the school year 2010 - 2011. Your daughter will bring home a
current transcript with her course requirement materials. The 2010 – 2011 Course Catalog will be available on the
school website (www.carondelet.net) at the end of January. On February 1, Sr. Anne
Eugene, Ms. Harris and I will be visiting classes to instruct students in the
pre-registration process; we will be available every day from January 28 –
February 19 during lunch and at break in the Inner Court to provide advice and
answer questions. Online Course registration begins Feb 4 and must be completed
by Feb 22.
Summer School: Please note
that any D's or F's on your daughter’s transcript will need to be
remediated for one of the following reasons:
a. Course must be
retaken in summer school to meet the prerequisites for the next level course.
Please note that course prerequisites are confirmed by Semester 2 grades; if
these grades do not meet the required minimum, the course will have to be
retaken during summer school to raise the grade.
b.
Course must be
retaken in summer school to satisfy Carondelet High School graduation
requirements; a grade of “D” is passing and need not be remediated to meet
graduation requirements.
c. Course should
be retaken in summer school to raise the grade to a C- or better in preparation
for college/university application. Please consult either Mrs. Susich or Mrs.
Breazeale if you have any questions about college eligibility.
PLEASE NOTE:
Both semester and summer
school grades appear on transcripts. Only the semester grade is averaged into
the cumulative GPA.
Advisement Evening:
In order to better assist you in planning your daughter’s
schedule, our annual Parent Advisement Night is designed this year as a
“Drop-In” Advisement Evening on Thursday, February 4, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in
the Garaventa Center. The chairs of our academic departments will be available
to speak with parents about class offerings, Mrs. Susich and Mrs. Breazeale will
address any college concerns, and Sr. Anne Eugene, Ms. Harris and I will answer
questions about graduation requirements and co-curricular activities. Because
this evening is designed solely for advisement purposes, concerns about your
daughter’s progress in a particular class should be raised in a separate
conference with her teacher.
AP Classes: On February 4 at 7:30 pm, we will
hold a meeting in the DLS Hofmann Center for students and parents interested in
information on Advanced Placement Classes.
Individual teachers cannot make any exceptions to prerequisites
or enrollment limitations.
Placement is made on the
basis of the student’s transcript and first-semester grades, and confirmed by
the second-semester grades. Certain courses have strict prerequisites which
have been developed in consultation with the academic departments and approved
by the Assistant Principal. In addition, enrollment is limited in Advanced
Placement and Honors courses. If the number of students requesting a class
exceeds the spaces available, final selection will be based on GPA; a
“wait-list” will be maintained. Students who do not
meet prerequisites will be removed from the class; reinstatement will be at the
discretion of the Academic Advisor.
Please refer to the Course Catalog,
especially the Four-Year Planning Guide, in preparing your daughter’s
pre-registration requests. If you will be coming to the “Drop-In” Advisement
Evening, please bring the Course Catalog, your daughter’s Course Request Form,
and the enclosed unofficial copy of her transcript.
If you have further questions as you and your
daughter plan her future courses, please e-mail either Ms. Harris, 9-
10 grade Academic Advisor, Mrs. Libby 11grade Academic Advisor or
Sr. Anne Eugene, 12 grade Academic Advisor.
Sincerely,
Nancy K. Libby, ‘76

Deans' Corner
1. Cell phone use-In the fall CHS presented a talk about
the pitfalls of internet and texting use. The Deans would like to suggest that
CHS parents also monitor their daughter’s cell phone use. Once a week, it would
be prudent to check your daughter’s text messages. This correspondence should
not be occurring during school hours and the message contents of course should
be as clean as spoken words. Some studies have shown that frequent text
messaging can become an addiction and remember that any visual or transmission
that could be construed as obscene could be prosecuted for violating FCC rules,
or in extreme cases for trafficking in pornography.
2. Jr. Prom-Saturday, March 20, 2010. This dance is held at Carondelet High School from 7:00 to 11:00 pm
This is an event that the students look forward to and we would like to give
suggestions that would make this a memorable evening. Wear comfortable shoes,
the high stilettos cause the feet to become very sore and blisters to develop.
Your daughter may want to bring another pair of shoes that are comfortable. The
dress should fit comfortably; a dress that is too tight, too short or too
revealing should not be worn to a Catholic high school prom.
3. Movie Night-Friday, April 16, 2010, at
Carondelet High School, in the Garaventa Center. The dress is casual. It is
wonderful way for Freshmen and Sophomores to meet their classmates. Please be
aware of what your daughter is doing before this event and what she is wearing. Parents may either pick up or drop off their daughter at DLS or CHS. We ask
that you respect our neighbors and keep the noise limited to our campuses.
4. Driving to school-We recommend that students who do
not have a parking place continue to ride with their car pool. If it is
absolutely essential that your daughter drive and park in the area, please try
to have her walk from her car to school with other students. It is important
that when they are walking from their parking place to school that they are
alert and aware of their surroundings.
5. Skirts-Thank you to those who have lengthened the
skirts for your daughter/s. There are still many of the girls whose skirts are
too short. We realize that many of the skirts the Junior and Senior girls are
wearing are from Freshman and Sophomore year. These skirts rarely fit the girls
who are now Juniors and Seniors. Please take the time to measure the length of
your daughter’s skirt. A reminder: The skirt length is to be no more than
two inches above the top of the knee cap. Please refer to this description on
page 33 in the Carondelet handbook.

Campus Ministry
A busy second semester is in full swing. Our Ash Wednesday service will
be Wednesday, February 17. Students will need to wear
dress uniform attire (skirt or long pants, a white polo, school sweater
and black dress flats).
The annual Mother/Daughter Retreat is scheduled for
Sunday, February 21 9:15 am-1:30 pm. This is a wonderful
opportunity for young women to spend time with their mother or adult
woman in their family who nurtures them. Registration forms, which can
be picked up in the front office, are due by February 11.
Save the date—March 7—for the
Father/Daughter liturgy and brunch. This annual event celebrates the
importance of the fatherly role model in the lives of our young women.
If a father is unavailable to attend, we encourage our students to
invite the adult man in their family who encourages and supports them on
their path to womanhood. The 10:30 am liturgy in the gym is followed by
a luncheon in the Garaventa Center. Tickets are needed for the
luncheon.
Another Kairos retreat happens Feb 2-4. Please
keep all attendees in your thoughts and prayers. Spaces are still
available for the April 19-21 Kairos, but registrations need to be
turned in now. Please contact Mrs. Mondello if your daughter would like
to attend, if the $250 fee is a problem. Some financial assistance
has been made available.
CHS Junior religious study classes begin taking
their Urban Plunge this month, visiting and working at St. Anthony’s
Foundation in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco. Please direct
any questions you may have about this one day immersion experience to
your daughter’s religious studies teacher.

Interscholastic
Sports
Congratulations to the Varsity Volleyball team and the Varsity
Cross Country team for attaining the highest goal of educational
athletics, combining outstanding academic performance with
interscholastic athletic participation. Both teams earned the NCS
Scholastic Girls’ Div. II Varsity championship team award for the Fall
season; Cross Country with a grade point team average of 3.69 and
Volleyball with a 3.48. Recognizing that there are 168 schools in the
NCS, this is indeed an outstanding achievement.
The Girls’ Varsity Basketball team has been busy competing: San
Diego La Jolla Country Day Sweet Sixteen tournament, West Coast
Jamboree, Martin Luther King Classic and are doing well in EBAL league
play. Ricki Radanovich and Erica Payne were named as Athletes of
the Week in the Contra Costa Times. Erica was also mentioned in the San
Francisco Chronicle in January in the “Week in Review/High School”
section. The Frosh and Junior Varsity Basketball teams ran very
successful CHS Cougar tournaments and are having a successful season.
The Varsity Soccer team competed in the Tri-Valley Invitational
and are also doing well in the EBAL. Frosh and Junior Varsity teams are
working hard and have won several tournaments.
Cheer and Dance
have been competing at the United Spirit Association regional
competitions with Junior Varsity Dance and Junior Varsity Cheer
receiving first places at the Deer Valley regional competition in
January; Varsity Cheer received a second place.
Please mark you sports calendars for the important upcoming events:
February 8 – Spring Sports begin (tryout site information on the CHS
Athletic web site and is posted on the Athletic Director’s window).
February 18 – Spring Sports Parent’s Meeting, 7:00 pm in the Garaventa
Center.
CIF/NCS requires that students must have a current (only considered
current for up to one year from the date that the physical was given)
physical or physician’s release before trying out for any of
Carondelet’s sport teams. This information needs to be on the “CHS
Physical Form”, which has been approved by the CHS school board.
All physicals are kept on file in the Attendance office. A list
containing student names and dates are available in the Athletic
office. Blank physical forms, to be filled out by the doctor, are
available in the Main office, locker room lobby, Athletic office or
online at the Carondelet High School athletic web site.

Financial Aid for Seniors
All seniors seeking financial aid for college should file the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as income tax information is available.
Remember, it is best to apply early, and you are allowed to submit estimates
which later may be adjusted. It is important to honor college deadlines since
colleges may set their own financial aid deadlines. Online applications are
available at
www.fafsa.ed.gov. Online financial aid help is also available through
Tuition Coach on Naviance.
Cal Grant GPA forms will be filed by Carondelet High School prior to the March 2
deadline for all seniors who have turned in release forms authorizing Mrs.
Missaggia, our Registrar, to calculate and to send Cal Grant GPA forms.
California Cash for College is a statewide program designed to provide free,
professional assistance to families completing the FAFSA. Online at
www.californiacashforcollege.org you will find a listing of free financial
aid workshops in our area.
Scholarship Opportunities for Seniors
This is a good time
for seniors to focus on college scholarships. Most scholarships require an
application, recommendation, transcript, and essay. Some scholarships may
require financial information. Please check Naviance for a complete list
of scholarships currently available for seniors.
Senior Counseling
Seniors are reminded to continue to bring in college acceptances, denials,
deferrals, and wait-list offers. Families should refer to the Red Binder (page
55) for detailed information on submitting scholarship, grant, and award
information for the Academic Awards Night, the graduation program, the
Carondeletter, and the newspaper.
Junior Counseling
We advise all juniors to take the SAT Reasoning Test in March, May or June and
the ACT with Writing Assessment Test in April or June. Juniors considering
colleges which require SAT Subject Tests should register for the June test
date. Online registration is preferred at
www.collegeboard.com for SAT and at
www.act.org for ACT testing.
To assist in the college planning process, juniors are advised to fill in
appropriate portions of the About Me section online through
Naviance/Family Connection. Students needing assistance with Naviance
or with accessing information should come to the College & Career Center.
Sophomore Counseling
All sophomores were scheduled through their English classes to meet with College
Counselors in January or February. Parents of sophomores will be interested in
reviewing the results of the PLAN tests and the research assignment which were
part of the College and Career sessions.
Freshman Counseling
Beginning in February and continuing into March, freshmen will meet with College
Counselors and complete a Meyers-Briggs type inventory assessment on Naviance,
our web based college and career search resource. Sessions have been scheduled
through freshmen Religious Studies classes and more detailed information will be
sent home about Naviance and about the Do What You Are assessment.
Parents will be interested in reviewing their daughter’s Do What You Are
report which offers insights into learning styles, strengths, and possible blind
spots. To access Naviance and to complete their assignment, all freshmen
will need an email address.
All School Career Fair Wednesday March 10, 2010
Carondelet
High School will be hosting a Career Fair on Wednesday, March 10, 2010, from
7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. in the Garaventa Center. The purpose of the Career Fair
is to provide an opportunity for all of our students to meet and speak with
people working in a variety of occupations, many of whom are Carondelet alums.
We anticipate having 60 individuals appear at the Career Fair, representing a
wide range of fields. Carondelet Alums or parents who would like to be part of
the program, please contact Mary Goebel Frevele CHS '75 Alumnae Relations
Director
at
mfrevele@carondeleths.org or at (925) 686-5353 x155.
Scholarships and Special Programs
Listed below are a few of the scholarships available to students. The complete
list of scholarships may be accessed by juniors and seniors through their
Naviance accounts. For parents, it is also useful to check for scholarship
opportunities with your employer and with organizations to which you belong.

Senior Council
Senior Council would like to thank ASB
for coordinating a great time at Girls' Night Out at the end of January. Senior
Council members are proud to have sponsored the House of Zen Spa, the senior
theme room, where Carondelet students were able to relax while listening to
peaceful music and enjoying shoulder massages. A special thank you goes out to
the moms who volunteered for this event. At the time of this newsletter’s
publication, these moms are Karin Fahey, Katie Cook-Kelly, Tamara Nelson, and
Eileen Wilson- Koops. Thank you to all the parents for your support this year!

From the Personal
Counselors
Conflict is an inherent part of the
parent – teen relationship. It can be intensified during these years, as teens
experience increased growth of identity, independence, and responsibility. As
they struggle for independence, there may be a lack of willingness/readiness to
accept the accompanying responsibility. Sometimes parents have difficulty
letting their teens have the freedom that their young person thinks they
deserve.
Positive management of conflict can
bring families closer together and encourage healthy growth of teens. If
however, conflicts are not managed constructively, families can divide, and
relationships suffer. Below are some suggested tools to help manage conflict
between parents and teens:
- Asking open-ended questions that
begin with: How, When, Where, Do, What or Is, is a great place to start.
Tensions ease and the shift to problem solving comes naturally.
- Communication: Focus on the
present. Leave past issues in the past. All parties agree that the following
rules will be kept:
- No name calling
- No swearing
- No saying hurtful things
- Issues will be discussed calmly. If
that is not possible parties will separate, and each sit down and write out
what they are angry about. They will then meet and exchange their papers,
giving the other person time to read what is angering the other. Each will
then ask: “What would you like to see happen?” From there, both will listen
and develop a workable solution. Active listening, cooperation, and respect
are key here.
Parents and their teens have more things in common than
they think. Both share frustration, stress, time-pressures, disappointment, and
fear of failure. They both want the best for each other. How they deal with
these feelings and desires can create disconnects, but it can also be a basis
for managing conflict constructively.
Some conflict cannot be managed constructively by those
involved. Conflicts that keep occurring, are highly emotional, or where
resolution isn’t reachable by the disputants themselves, are candidates for
mediation. As counselors, we are here to serve as mediators for you and your
daughter, should the need arise.
Thank You,
Mary Ahern, MSW
