Letter from the Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Happy New Year! May this be one of your best years
ever, in every way possible. I hope all of you enjoyed a wonderful
Advent season and a blessed and Merry Christmas with family and
friends.
Our second semester begins on Monday, January 11
with the next Learning Expectation - “A Carondelet student is a
practitioner of healthy lifestyles.” Out Carondelet community will
focus on this expectation for the month, reviewing the other
expectations periodically as well.
Please welcome back Katie Almonte, one of our
Social Studies, who was on maternity leave for the first quarter.
Congratulations to you and your family! Thanks to Connie Tuft for
teaching her classes during that period. Mrs. Tuft is one of our
long-standing substitute teachers and we appreciate her expertise.
We have also had a couple of personnel changes in
the last month. Meta Pasternak, one of our seasoned English teachers,
will be out for the remainder of the school year, taking care of her
husband who is ill. Jack O’Leary has graciously accepted to stay and
teach the classes in her absence. In addition, Liz Jensen, one of our
Spanish teachers who has been on maternity leave, has made the decision
to resign. We wish her well as she continues her job as a full-time
stay-at-home mom. We are excited to have Marian Easthope continue her
stay in teaching Ms. Jensen’s classes.
Our Fontbonne Forum is planned for the spring,
prior to Easter vacation. Two teachers, Michael Murphy and Andrew Kjera
have been working since the fall semester with many students to plan and
realize this multi-media presentation. Thank you very much, gentlemen.
Also, I just wanted to be certain that you received
a copy of the Parent’s Guide for prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco and
Other Drug Use. This was mailed out and you should have received
this guide before Thanksgiving. Please contact our Office Manager,
Jeanine McDermott at
jmcdermott@carondeleths.org if you did not receive yours.
We have been notified that there are companies who
are attempting to sell “Carondelet High School” apparel. Please know
that we have informed them that they are not authorized to do so, and
students will not be allowed to wear these items to school. Please
continue to purchase apparel from Mills or our student store.
I’ll close by saying that the next time we meet
will probably be at the CHS Parent Association Crab Feed on Saturday,
February 6, wearing a Hawaiian outfit. Please find the flyer in this
newsletter and make your reservation early. I look forward to seeing
you then.
Again, let me extend my best wishes for a healthy,
happy and prosperous 2010.
Sincerely,
Teri Hurlbut, Ed. D.

From the Assistant Principal
Final First Semester grades will be posted BY 9:00 am on
Thursday, January 7, 2010 on PowerSchool. While some final grades may be
visible before that date, grades are NOT due until that time so please do not
call or email teachers about missing final grades until AFTER that date and
time.
Classes resume on January 11, 2010! That date
marks new educational beginnings whether or not your daughter is in a new
semester course OR a year long course. If her course of study “worked” for the
first semester …. satisfactory grades and thorough understanding of material ….
then encourage her to continue. If she is less than pleased with her
understanding and performance, perhaps she should attend Study Skills on Mondays
in order to learn some new techniques which may help her to do better.
And on that note …. Absences severely challenge students
to learn material and to keep up with coursework. During First Semester we
found that we had an inordinate amount of students missing class for reasons
other than illness. It is IMPOSSIBLE to replicate the instruction missed when a
student returns after an absence. (Teachers cannot spend time re-teaching in
private sessions. There simply isn’t enough time in the day!). Please use
designated vacation times for family trips. If a student must be absent for
more than a day for an unexcused reason, she must see her advisor PRIOR to the
dates she will be out.
Get ready because as strange as it may seem, it is also
time to get ready for next school year, 2010 – 2011! (Time does fly!) Course
catalogs, class registration procedures and Advisement opportunities will begin
during the first two weeks of February. Specific information to follow in the
next newsletter. |
Deans' Corner
-
Happy New Year - we hope you and your family had a
wonderful holiday season and the new year brings you health and happiness.
-
Dance – The Spirit Dance is February 27, 2010, from 7:00
to 10:00 p.m. in the Garaventa Center. We are asking the students who are
driving to the dance to park in the DLS parking lot, and the students who are
being picked up please be picked up at Carondelet. If you are picking your
daughter up at Carondelet for safety reasons, do not stop in front of the Garaventa Center to pick up. As always,
remember to be respectful of the neighbors in the community and to keep the music off in your car and talk
quietly until you leave the parking lot. The Spirit Dance is also a Guest Pass
Dance. Guest passes will be on line beginning February 8. Please talk to
your daughter, if she plans to attend the dance, about her style of dancing. The
freaking, grinding and bending over is not what we expect of our students.
-
Uniform Skirts – Parents have requested that the skirt
length be more rigorously enforced. Please speak to your daughter about whether
or not she changes her skirt length when at school. We know this is a battle
you can help us with and together we may be able to keep the skirts 2 inches
from the top of the knee.
-
Misplaced articles – Please caution your daughter to
keep her backpacks, and other valuables within her sight. Many articles
(calculators, wallets, cell phones) have been taken from the locker room area,
some in confusion and some intentionally.
-
Windshield wipers, rain and headlights – According to
the California State Vehicle Code Section #24400-24411, a condition requiring the
windshield wipers to be in continuous use due to rain, mist, snow, fog or other
precipitation or atmospheric moisture.
-
In case of a serious emergency (earthquake, police
lockdown, etc.) DO NOT CALL, text or otherwise try to communicate with your
daughter. In our emergency procedures we have a specific time for your
daughters to contact you. We cannot afford to have students distracted while we
are implementing our safety procedures. Because
it is a new year we have changes that you need and your daughter to be
aware of in order to avoid any confusion or problems this year.
EMERGENCY EVACUATION
(Information for parents to keep)
If Carondelet has an emergency evacuation due to an
earthquake, disaster, power failure, plumbing problem, etc., please do the
following:
-
Tune in to KGO Channel 7 or KGO 810 AM for information
regarding the release. Understand that in case of an earthquake or
disaster; we will contact the local authorities to be sure it is safe to
release your daughter(s) before doing so.
-
Please do not call your daughter on her cell phone.
As a safety issue, we need their full attention. Your daughter or
the school will call you at the appropriate time.
-
On the (yellow) emergency card, you stated whether your
daughter could sign herself off campus. Please make prior
arrangements now with your daughter as to a pre-determined meeting place.
Once Carondelet releases your daughter, we will not be responsible for
her safety.
-
If you indicated your daughter not to be released until
signed out by a parent or pre-determined adult (names are on emergency
cards), please wait for our call.
-
When picking up your daughter, park at Shadelands or
nearby and go to the pedestrian gate on Winton Drive where your daughter
will be released.

Campus Ministry
On Saturday, January 23,
Carondelet students are invited to
participate in the West Coast Walk for Life in San Francisco. Mr. David
Mammola, a religious studies teacher, will be accompanying our students.
We would welcome the addition of parents who would like to walk with
our group. Please contact the Campus Ministry Office at Ext. 167 if you are
interested. This annual event is particularly close to our heart
because one of its original sponsors was one of our former Religious
Studies teachers, Ms. Diane Barberini, now deceased.
The annual Mother/Daughter Retreat is just around
the corner. The event begins early on Sunday, February 21 and concludes with a mass in the early afternoon. This is a wonderful
opportunity to spend some quality time together. Additional information
regarding the event can be found elsewhere in this newsletter.
Parents whose daughters are scheduled to attend the
February 2-4 Kairos Retreat should expect to receive a mailing from the
Campus Ministry Office in early January. Please contact Mrs. Mondello
at Ext. 167 if you do not receive it by January 10.
Seniors who are interested in attending the April
19-21 session should turn in a registration form to the Campus Ministry
Office by
January 31. Please contact Mrs. Mondello if financial
assistance is needed.
The Campus Ministry Office wishes you and your
family a very Happy New Year.

Senior Counseling – Mid-Year Reports
Seniors applying to private schools must request Mid-Year reports
(transcripts which include first semester senior grades) on Naviance
/ my colleges so they may be submitted electronically. For Mid-Year Reports
which need to be mailed, seniors make requests using gold forms in Mrs.
Missaggia’s (Registrar) office. For mailed reports, seniors are asked to
include a stamped and addressed envelope with their request. Mid-Year
reports are not sent to UC campuses and only to CSU campuses which
specifically request them.
Senior Counseling – Applying for Housing
Seniors considering attending California State University campuses or
out-of-state public universities will want to check individual websites for
housing application information and deadlines. It may be necessary to submit
housing applications even prior to receiving an admissions decision. Some
campuses have limited housing and process applications on a first come,
first served basis. Housing application deadlines may be as early as
January. Seniors may link to the CCC wiki from their Naviance
page for more CSU campus specific housing information.
Financial Aid
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) online applications (www.fafsa.ed.gov)
will become available on January 1. The preferred method of filing the FAFSA
is online. You may register for a FAFSA pin number at
www.pin.ed.gov. Check with individual colleges concerning financial aid
priority filing deadlines. If students are applying to colleges both in and
out of California, make sure to include a California college on the list to
be eligible for Cal Grants. Mrs. Missaggia will submit Cal Grant GPA
Verifications by the March 2 deadline for all seniors who have
provided written authorization (this form was in the June packet). If you
have questions, please see Mrs. Missaggia.
Junior Counseling
Please reserve either Thursday, January 14, 7:00 p.m. or Saturday, January
16, 10:00 a.m. to attend a parent/daughter counseling session to review PSAT
results as well as to discuss the college application process. PSAT results
will be returned to the students and interpreted at these times, and parents
will be introduced to the Naviance college counseling program. Both
sessions will be held in the Garaventa Center. These sessions are the first
in a series of four different workshops for parents on the college
application process.
Sophomore Counseling
PLAN results will be returned and interpreted in sophomore English classes
as part of a two-part college and career-planning project in January or
February. As part of this project, students will be required to interview
people working in various careers or professions. For the sophomore PLAN
project, each student will need to have her Naviance user name and
password. If any sophomore has changed her email address, she will need to
come into the College & Career Center prior to her scheduled PLAN project.
Career Fair March 10, 2010
“All of which woman is capable” is literally on display at the Carondelet
Career Fair featuring more than fifty people, from professional athletes to
CSI’s and stay-home moms to actors. These professionals include many
Carondelet alumnae, who come to share their career stories with hundreds of
curious Carondelet students. Carondelet provides each professional with a
table, where they can display the tools of their trade. As students walk
through, they seek out representatives from the careers they’re interested
in—or already planning to enter after college. The students are inquisitive
interviewers and good listeners, interested in learning about the realities
of the jobs and the professionals’ work lives.
The Career Fair will be held on Wednesday, March 10, 2010, from 7:30 to 9:00
am in the Garaventa Center. Carondelet especially encourages alumnae to
represent their careers and share their stories at the Career Fair!
If you are interested in participating, please contact Mary Goebel Frevele

Community Service
The Jefferson Awards Student Leaders have had a very productive second quarter
of the school year. With the help of the period four representatives and a
generous faculty, they have raised over $4,800 for the Get On The Bus
Foundation. This brings them over the half-way mark toward their goal of
$9,000. On November 18, four juniors were honored at an assembly for the
extraordinary service they have performed. Kelsey Chabolla served the poor
children and farmers in Northern India through the Rustic Pathways
Organization. Jessica Roland used her initiative to raise over $8,000 for
breast cancer research in honor of her grandmother. Robyn Birkenfeld-Malpass
is being honored for her continuous service to physically and mentally
challenged teen-agers and their care givers through a program called Reachin’
Out. Jessica Fleming has been involved with the Delta Children’s Theater for
many years and is continuing that commitment this year even though it means she
will not be dancing in The Nutcracker herself.
From the Personal
Counselors
Over the past decade there has been much
written about helicopter parenting and its negative effects on our current
generation of youth. Though this over-parenting was rooted in an attempt to do
what is best for the child, it has contributed to the high stress level teens
experience as well as challenged the growth of healthy decision making skills,
independence and creativity. Over scheduling in grade school is continuing into
high school and beyond. College deans are noticing students arriving at school
already burnt out or ready to break at the tiniest stress. Parents are becoming
increasingly involved in the college life of their children prompting schools to
create policies around parent involvement; i.e. parents prohibited from course
registration. It has also been noted that some parents continue to deliver
morning wake-up calls even though their son or daughter is off at college.
In a recent related article in Time
Magazine, they quote the Ithaca College website which offers a checklist of
advice for parents: “Visit (but not too often); Communicate (but not too
often); Don’t worry (too much); Expect change; Trust them.” While this advice
is perfect for parents of incoming college freshmen, teens need to be prepared
beginning in high school. Increased responsibility for decision making, problem
solving, use of personal time, social and academic life are critical for the
development of the maturity and independence they will need in college and
throughout life. If they are not given the opportunity to experience for
themselves their successes as well as failures and learn from these, they are
being set up to remain dependent. In other words (as quoted in the above
article): “Less is more; hovering is dangerous; failure is fruitful. You really
want your children to succeed? Learn when to leave them alone. When you
lighten up, they will fly higher. We are often the ones who hold them down.”

From the Parent Association
We hope that all our Carondelet families were able to share a blessed and
memorable Christmas with their loved ones. And now it’s time for the New Year!
The Parent Association has several exciting events coming this winter. But
first, many thanks to Linda D’Souza for the wonderful Mother/Daughter Liturgy
and Brunch this past fall. It was a very special morning for mothers and
daughters to share a wonderful Mass honoring their special bond.
Also, we cannot begin to say thank you enough to Mickey O’Regan, Deborah Clawson
and Susan Palomino and their incredible Hospitality Committee for providing
refreshments for the mandatory Parent Education Series meetings on Sexting, the
Freshman Retreat and the annual Carondelet Open House. Many hands made sure
there were lots of yummy snacks and beverages for those who attended these
events. If you would like to know more about the Hospitality Committee and
volunteer opportunities available, please contact any of the co-chairs at their
email addresses:
mickeyor@comcast.net
, debraclawson@comcast.net
, palominog@comcast.net . This is a
wonderful committee which has several opportunities throughout the year to not
only obtain PIP hours, but to become a part of our Carondelet community.
Upcoming Events
Annual Crab Feed – Saturday February 6, 2010 – 6:00 P.M.
Mark your calendars and order your tickets now for the always
popular annual Crab Feed! The date is set and our tropical theme is just
perfect for warming up winter! Please see the following flyer for more
information and ticket ordering. This event is ideal for catching up with
Carondelet parents and alumnae and making new friendships. We have never known
anyone to walk away from this event without smiles and memories!! Many helpful
hands are needed to make this evening the success that it is every year so if
you are interested in helping out, then please contact the Parent Association
for more info regarding this fun evening! We have several volunteer
opportunities and maybe one will match your talents!
Father/Daughter Liturgy – Sunday March 7, 2010 – 10:00 A.M.
Our Father/Daughter Liturgy is a spiritually rewarding wonderful
morning for fathers and daughters to share in their faith. This special
event is scheduled for Sunday, March 7 at 10:00 A.M. Please join us and be a part of
this special liturgy with other fathers who believe in the faith and commitment
we share with our CHS daughters. If
your dad is not available, you may bring another adult male in his place that
supports and serves as your male role model.
If you have any questions, please contact committee
chair Rosanna Gastello at 925.639.4171 or
rgastello@sbcglobal.net .
Parent Speaker Event Evening: - Tuesday March 16, 2010:
In conjunction with the Carondelet Administration and Deans, the
Parent Association will be co-hosting a special Parent Speaker Event prior to
the Junior Prom and Senior Ball, addressing alcohol use and related issues. This
is a serious issue with our girls and we look forward to everyone attending
this event.
Senior Grad Night – Sunday May 23, 2010
It ‘s the start of a new year and May seems so far off but before
you know it, Grad Night will be here! (Senior parents – you know how fast
four years have gone by!) This is a special event for our seniors and lots
of work and planning is involved in making this night a success. Your child does not
need to be a senior for you to help at this event. For parents of juniors and
sophomores, it’s a great way to find out what’s ahead for the next year. It’s also a
great way to meet people, have fun and earn your PIP hours. What a way
to watch our seniors celebrate their graduation!!
Your participation and support of these events is greatly
appreciated and always welcome! And remember to keep checking our website for
current information on events and volunteer opportunities. You can always call
any one of us on the Board and we will be happy to help you.
