Letter from the Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back to a new year at Carondelet High School!  It does not seem possible that just a few short weeks ago we were enjoying a little R&R.  I hope that you are beginning to think about the autumn season because it’s just around the corner.

The faculty and staff returned in early August with a lovely retreat at San Damiano.  The days that followed were filled with staff development and meetings.  The ASB leadership, Spiritual Life Council, peer counselors, cheerleaders and dance team were all present for an energizing Frosh Orientation on Sunday, August 16.  I can tell by all the smiling faces that the members of the Class of 2013 are excited to be here.

September is proving to be a busy month for students and their parents.  Teachers will be focusing on our first Learning Expectation – A Carondelet student is a Gospel-centered woman this month and next. Our learning expectations are based on the Carondelet High School philosophy.  Please ask your daughter about the activities and discussions in which they are participating.

A parent meeting for all the fall sports is scheduled for Wednesday, September 2.  More details can be located in this newsletter.  On the following night, Thursday, we have our Back to School Night planned.  If you are a parent of a freshman or sophomore, please consider attending the Picnic Dinner preceding BTSN.  The dinner begins at 5pm, followed by a panel presentation.  The Counseling Department planned this event last year and it was well-received.  We hope that you can join us before the 7pm start of Back to School Night.

On Wednesday, September 23  and Thursday, September 24 (both are at 7:00pm), we have planned mandatory parent meetings on the issue of the dangers of "Sexting". (Choose ONE meeting to attend.)  In this age of advanced technology, we sometimes find it a challenge to stay abreast of its damaging effects.  It is not often that meetings of this nature are planned, but because this topic is very much of a concern to many of us, I ask that one parent from each family be in attendance.  This meeting will be held in the Garaventa Center, beginning at 7pm.  Our Parent Association will be co-hosting this event.  Please plan to attend so that you are informed about this current issue regarding some of our youth today.

Please remind your daughters that the Garaventa Center is the place on campus to go to prior to 7:45am on school days.  There is no supervision in the academic building until that time.  Students will have until 8:10am to go to their lockers, get their books, etc.  Please help us in our endeavor to provide a safe campus for your daughters.

Lastly, we learned last week that one of our alumnae, Natalie Coughlin, will be appearing on Dancing with the Stars.  Show your Cougar support and give her your vote.  This should be fun!

Carondelet High School is a great place for a young woman’s education.  Our classes and activities are student-centered and mission-driven.  I welcome your ideas in this venture.

May you enjoy these high school years along with your daughter,

Teri Hurlbut, Ed. D.

Principal

Monday August 31st is the last day to sign up for the Carondelet Prepaid Campus Account.

The Carondelet Prepaid Campus Account will be the new method of payment for on campus purchases moving forward.  A cashless campus is more convenient for parents, safer for students, and more efficient for our school.  Our goal is to have all students using this program during the 2009/2010 school year.  If you decide not to use this program, your daughter may continue to purchase food by using cash.

If you have not already signed up, please take 5 minutes and do so by going to www.myschoolaccount.com.  You will need your student’s Carondelet Student ID Number to complete the process.  If you don’t know that number you can find it on your student’s class schedule.   After your account is established you may revisit www.myschoolaccount.com to reload funds, monitor purchases, and establish low balance notifications.    In addition you will have access to the VIP Program which provides Carondelet Parents with exclusive money saving offers from top local and national retailers.

The annual fee for the Carondelet Campus Account is $35 however you do have the choice to opt into GameFly’s free trial offer of Video Game Rentals Delivered To Your Door and GameFly will pay for your annual fee.   You may sign up by going to www.gamefly.com/schoolvip4.   Within 60 days of opting into the GameFly trial offer you will receive a credit equal to the amount you paid for the Campus Account annual fee.

*Offer ends 12/31/2009.  New GameFly members only (not valid for existing or former members). Limit one account per person/household. Must be 18 years or older with a valid credit card. Valid in 50 U.S. States and D.C. only and cannot be combined with any other offer.   Subject to additional terms and conditions at www.gamefly.com/terms.

Carondelet does not endorse GameFly or any other merchant participant, however since this is a way to offset your Campus Account annual fee, we figured you would want you to know about it.   Whether you sign up for GameFly’s trial offer which offsets your Carondelet Campus Account annual fee or if you chose to pay the $35, time is running out.  The deadline to sign up for the Campus Account is Monday August 31.

From the Assistant Principal, Mrs. Libby

The 2009-10 school year has begun and what an easy beginning it has been!  Students and teachers seem to have gotten back into the “groove” without missing a beat.  I am impressed with everyone’s friendliness, hard work and positive attitude.

Since we now have PowerSchool access for everyone, students and parents can keep track of academic progress from the beginning of the year. (We do expect that everyone is checking grades regularly … weekly seems about right!  Several times a day is too much!)   If there are questions about a grade, students should contact the teacher immediately.  If you still do not have your PowerSchool log-in information, please contact JoAnn DiDonato in the main office (686-5353 x. 177) to get this. Please be reminded that teachers have two weeks from the due date to post grades for assignments and/or tests.

Students should actively seek help from teachers if they are experiencing difficulty.  Every teacher is open to working with students who need additional assistance.  And of course, Academic Advisors are available every day when needed.  Please encourage your daughter to talk with her Academic Advisor at the first sign of difficulty with her classes.  (Frosh – Sophomore Advisor:  Ms. Harris; Juniors: Mrs. Libby; and Seniors: Sr. Anne Eugene) They are here to problem solve, help with study skills and general advice.  No need to wait until a student feels totally overwhelmed.

Back-to-School-Night will be held on Thursday, September 3rd, at 7:30 pm, with a welcome by Dr. Hurlbut at 7:00 in the Garaventa for parents.  We encourage you to come early, as parking can be quite challenging with so many parents attending from both campuses. and limited parking is available.

There will be no progress reports mailed home this year, as all parents and students have access to their grades on PowerSchool.  We will send home a report card at the end of the first and 3rd quarter, however, as these grades are used in determining athletic eligibility and activity participation for the next quarter.

Semester grades (January/June) are grades posted to the official transcript of grades and are retained in your daughter’s permanent cumulative file.  These are also the determining grades in meeting pre-requisites for courses in which your daughter pre-registers in future years at Carondelet.  Any semester F grades must be made up before continuing enrollment at Carondelet for the following year is allowed.  Students who attended summer school of any kind (including on-line independent study courses) must request that official transcripts be sent to our Registrar’s Office in order to have the grade(s) for these courses posted on their transcript.  Please note that any courses taken off campus, at any time, are not recorded in the Carondelet GPA.

Don’t hesitate to give me a call at any time if I can be of service!  I am here to help ensure your daughter’s success at CHS and beyond.  I look forward to talking with you!

REMINDER: Parents please keep all email addresses updated on PowerSchool

Campus Ministry

Sophomore retreats will begin this month.  Each Religious Studies class goes as a group on a Tuesday to the Diocesan Youth Retreat Center in Lafayette for a fun day with Sr. Joann Heinritz, our Carondelet Director of CSJ Spirituality and Mission.   Additional information will be given to students through their Religious Studies class.

The first senior Kairos retreat is scheduled for September 15-17.  Students board a bus for San Damiano Retreat Center in Danville at 3pm on the first day and return to school by 6pm on the last day.  Please pray for us.

There still are available spots for both the November 11-13 and April 19-21 retreats.  Registration forms are available in the Campus Ministry Office.  Completed forms and a $50 nonrefundable registration fee should be turned in to Mrs. Mondello.  The remaining $200 balance for the retreat can be paid off whenever you like.  Please talk to Mrs. Mondello if financial assistance is needed.

Mark your calendar now for the annual Mother /Daughter Liturgy/Brunch on Sunday, October 4.  This is a wonderful way to celebrate your shared womanhood.  If a mom is not available to attend, we encourage our students to invite another adult woman from her family who has been her nurturer and mentor.   In the spring we will provide an opportunity for dads and daughters to share the same type of experience.

Once again this fall Carondelet and De La Salle Campus Ministries are offering junior and senior students an opportunity to participate in a fall   mission immersion experience, working in Salinas with migrant families and homeless people.  Applications to be part of this experience in mid October are due in the Campus Ministry Office by September 3rd.

The Campus Ministry Office is located just inside the senior hallway door that leads to the Garaventa Center.  You are always welcome to drop by and introduce yourself.

Mrs. Mondello

Special Message to

Parents of our Sophomores!

During the first semester your sophomore daughter will be participating in a one-day retreat at the Diocesan Youth Retreat Center in Lafayette.  The theme of the retreat, “All of which woman is capable,”  introduces these young ladies to the charism and mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph and how they are invited to explore that theme in their own lives.  Each sophomore Religion class, along with their Religious Studies teacher, will travel by bus on the designated Tuesday to the retreat center.  You are encouraged to check in with your daughter about her particular date and support her with your prayers.   She will be bringing home a permission form that you need to complete.  Because of the nature of this retreat day, it is not necessary that she bring her back pack or books.  However, she will need to bring her lunch and something to drink, along with a blanket or beach towel for the meditation.  We provide all the other materials needed for the retreat.  We ask that she leave her cell phone at home or in her locker on that day since it is a day to shift gears and be “unplugged.”

From past years we know what a bonding experience this is, as well as an enriching spiritual experience that includes presentations by the teacher, Sister Joann and the four Senior Peer Counselors who lead the small groups for the day.  The participants will have an opportunity to share their reflections in small groups, experience the relaxing and renewing aspects of meditation, journal about the various ways they are growing in their own faith journey, as well as a time for basking in the natural beauty and serenity of the Lafayette Retreat Center.

Blessings all over our sophomores on their retreat experience!

Visions of Christmas

Visions of Christmas 2009 – “The Message of Christmas”

Santa’s Elves are busier than ever this year and spreading lots of holiday cheer, glitter and fun as they prepare for Carondelet’s twentieth annual Visions of Christmas!  With seven holiday-themed events that are held just after Thanksgiving, (December 1 - 6) the vision is becoming a reality!  The success of Visions of Christmas depends on your involvement and enthusiasm.  Please join our team for this unique extravaganza.  Listed below are a few ways you can lend your support.  All proceeds benefit the campus building program.

As you begin to mark your calendar with fall activities, please consider putting Visions at the top of your list.  As the largest single fundraising event of the school year, the success of Visions of Christmas depends on your involvement and enthusiasm.  We need all your talents and experiences to help make Visions of Christmas ’09 even more successful than last year.  Please join our team for this unique Holiday extravaganza.  All money raised goes directly to the school building fund.  Listed below are a few ways you can lend your support.

As a CHS Parent:

We are asking each family to make a donation for the Silent and or Live auction with a $50 minimum value.  You can do this by

˜      soliciting an item

˜      donating a purchased item or a service

˜      a cash donation

We are looking for fun and unique items to enhance our Silent Auction tables.  Our Gourmet Basket committee is looking for items to turn into themed baskets. To help you help us, we have registered at Macy’s, Crate & Barrel and Cost Plus.  Just go to their websites and look up “Carondelet Carondelet” in the registry to take a look at our Visions wish list.  We also need assistance in procuring other items for our Silent and Live auctions such as:

˜      Vacation Homes or Condominiums

˜      Private Hosted Dinners

˜      Signed Celebrity Memorabilia

˜      Premium Wine, Wine and more Wine – people like to bid on interesting wines

˜      Lots of Restaurant Gift Certificates - Gives people an opportunity to try different restaurants and support CHS too!

˜      Sport Outing Packages

o        Fishing Trips

o        Super Bowl Excursion

o        Golf Packages

˜      Event Tickets

Please bring your donations to the Development Office by November 2nd A Curb-Side Service Donation Drop-Off Week is scheduled for the week of October 5 thru the 9th.   Look for Santa’s helpers and signs that week as you drop off your daughter in the morning.

As A Volunteer:

We need lots of volunteers!  LOTS.  In fact, last year we used 200 volunteers over the course of the event.  If you expressed an interest in Visions of Christmas on your PIP form, the Volunteer Coordinator should be calling you shortly to schedule your assignment.  If you forgot to check Visions of Christmas, and are interested in helping, please let me know and I will be pleased to let the Volunteer Coordinator know.   Also, it is possible that you checked your interest and have not been called.  Chalk that up to human error . . .call us!

Below are listed several of the opportunities for you to volunteer your time to get those PIP hours out of the way.  We have committee chair positions open as well as lots and lots of worker bee spots to fill.  In particular, we need parent volunteers to:

«      Co-Chair the Gala

«     solicit auction items

«      play the piano during the teas

«      co-chair the Senior Suitcase

«      chair or co-chair the over-all room decorations of the Garaventa Center

«      be Santa Claus for the breakfast

«     create gourmet baskets

«     work in the Boutique

«     make cookies, sandwiches and scones

«     set-up and clean-up

Whether you like creative tasks, organizational tasks, or just like to be told what to put where, we have a job for you.

As an Underwriter:

Our goal is to have each of the seven events completely underwritten.  To do this, we need your help.  Please consider Visions 2009 Sponsorship opportunities for you and your workplace.  Many companies will match a donation given by an employee.  We are a 501 (c)3 Foundation.  Check to see if the company you work for participates in that type of program.  Sponsorship opportunities are listed on the CHS website.

Community Service

The Community Service Program hit the ground running.  The Jefferson Awards Youth Service Initiative Leadership Team introduced the project for the year, GET ON THE BUS at an assembly on August 27.  This charity was inaugurated ten years ago by Sister  Suzanne Jabro, CSJ  and has been a pet project of the Sisters of St. Joseph ever since. Carondelet has been challenged to raise $9,000 during the current school year to allow those children who live so far from their mothers that is necessary for them to get on the plane to visit their mothers on Mother's Day. You may access the web site for GOTB at www.getonthebus.us.  The student body was shown the 2007 video in their period 4 classes.

Dina Bartello, the representative of the Jefferson Awards Youth Service Initiative to Carondelet,  presented a golden banner to the student body at the assembly in recognition of the outstanding service done by the students during the 2008-2009 school year.

            The eighty-three students who chose to do service during the summer are handing in their final packets.  Reading the evaluations from the girls' supervisors makes us proud to be mentors for these young women of service who are living out the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph; To do all of which woman is capable in service to the dear neighbor. Twenty-six students are enrolled in the Community Service A Class and are already going out to their service sites during the school day.  ; ;

PRIVATE COLLEGE INFORMATIONAL EVENING FOR PARENTS OF SENIORS

Thursday, October 1 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Garaventa Center

The College and Career Center will be hosting the annual college planning evening for parents of seniors on Thursday, October 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Garaventa Center.  Parents of seniors will meet with College Counselors Linda Breazeale and Neville Susich, who will provide planning materials and outline the steps to take this fall for successful selection of,  application, and acceptance to colleges and universities.  Specifically, this workshop is intended to aid parents in understanding the college application process in the senior year. Navigating the Senior Year is Carondelet’s multimedia presentation, which will provide the most up-to-date application and financial information from the University of California, California State University, and College Board counselor conferences. This meeting will cover different material from that presented at the meeting for parents of juniors last January. We encourage all parents of seniors to attend. There will be an opportunity to ask questions. Please don’t miss it! Call or email Mrs. Breazeale, ext.139, lbreazeale@carondeleths.org  or Mrs. Susich, ext. 140,  nsusich@carondeleths.org  if you have questions.

FALL COLLEGE COUNSELING FOR SENIORS

September kicks off college counseling for seniors. Each senior will receive her college counseling Red Binder in a scheduled 4th period session in the computer lab. In these hands-on sessions under the direction of the college counselors, seniors will log onto Naviance and begin entering information for their college applications and review the information in the Red Binder. In September, seniors will also sign-up for individual college counseling appointments.  For the September 30th all-school early start, seniors will meet in the Garaventa Center to go over application steps such as requesting transcripts and teacher and counselor letters of recommendation.

Throughout the fall, it is important for seniors to frequent the College and Career Center. Individual appointments are scheduled at lunch, during 7th period, and after school. Before school and break are good times to “drop-in” with questions. Students are always welcome to use the computers in the CCC and the phones for college-related business.

COLLEGE APPLICATION WORKSHOP WEDNESDAY FOR SENIORS                                              Wednesday, October 14 from 8:15 to 11:45 a.m.

On October 14, while juniors and sophomores are testing, step-by-step online college application workshops will be conducted for seniors at Workshop Wednesday.  College Counselors will demonstrate the correct way to complete online applications for UC, CSU, and independent colleges.  To ensure accuracy, the counselors will supervise seniors as they enter information from their transcripts.  Entering incorrect information may prevent a student from being considered for admission.  On this same day, students may also attend essay workshops, thereby learning how to most accurately address the essay prompts and to distinguish themselves from other applicants.  Please encourage your daughter to sign-up in the College and Career Center. Space is limited.

SAT/ACT TEST REGISTRATION AND METHOD TEST PREPARATION

Seniors planning to take additional SAT Reasoning Tests, SAT Subject Tests, or the ACT will register online at www.CollegeBoard.com or www.act.org. Many highly selective colleges, including the UC’s, require at least 2 SAT Subject Tests in addition to the SAT Reasoning Test or ACT with Writing. UC campuses will accept tests through the December test dates. Some colleges (e.g. San Diego State University) require testing to be completed by the October test date, and students applying early action or early decision to any college, need to be mindful of early testing requirements. Colleges require official test scores be sent from ACT and/or the College Board.

Seniors are encouraged to prepare for their ACT and SAT testing by using Method Test prep on Naviance. The College and Career Center also maintains a library of test preparation materials which students are welcome to check out if they wish. ACT and SAT dates, deadlines, and school code (050656) are included in the CHS Planner and on the College and Career web pages. To access the College and Career web pages, select Curriculum and click on College & Career. We strongly advise juniors to wait until they have completed the first semester and have their PSAT results before taking their first ACT and SAT tests.

COLLEGE ADMISSIONS OFFICERS VISITING CARONDELET AND DE LA SALLE

Representatives from the Admissions Offices of colleges and universities nationwide are now scheduling visits from September through December. Seniors and juniors will be notified of the daytime visits through daily announcements and on Naviance - About College – visit schedule. Students are required to sign up in the College and Career Center at least one day ahead of time and to have a signed green permission form from their teacher in order to attend. These meetings are valuable personal contacts with college admissions officers who can provide specific information, answer questions, and assess qualifications.

In addition, many college representatives will hold evening meetings in the area for students and parents.  Announcements of these presentations will also be posted on Naviance - visit schedule.

Library

Welcome Back! The Library is staffed full-time by two Librarians (Mrs. Tracy and Ms. Koski) and is open for student use from 7:45 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. including break and lunch.  This year we have several new electronic databases to help with your daughter’s research needs. Please check out the link on the Carondelet Library page for Online Database. Some interesting ones to look at would be: NoveList, where you can find readers’ advisory or Newspaper Source Plus, where you can read papers from around the world. To access the databases from home you will need to know the login and password. Ask your daughter.

From the Personal Counselors

The personal counselors are available to provide support for our students and their families.  In order for us to be of assistance, we highly encourage you to contact one of us in the event of a family crisis, such as a death, illness, separation or divorce.  Counseling services are confidential.

In addition to individual sessions we currently conduct ongoing support groups for the following:

  • Students whose parents are separated or divorced
  • Students who have lost a family member through death
  • Students with identity issues
  • Students who come to Carondelet without peer support

As the need arises we will offer additional support groups on other issues.  Please feel free to call either of us with any questions or concerns.  We also have a page on the Carondelet website that includes links to relevant teen topics.

Student Activities

CHS WONDERWOMEN!!!

Looking back, the freshmen were welcomed into the new school year by their Peer Counselors and cheered on by Carondelet’s Cheer team.  Orientation was a breeze when the ASB superwomen flew the freshmen through their assembly lines.  Kudos to ASB and Special Events Commissioner, Kelly Calton, for wowing the freshmen and introducing them to the spirit of Carondelet with the first ever Frosh Rally.  Frosh Welcome Week was a huge hit and capped off by the frosh mixer, always a favorite of the freshmen class because they finally got to meet and dance with the boys from across the street.

Looking forward to this year’s theme is...... “All of which women is capable”.  The goal for the leadership class, i.e. the CIA- “Cougars in Action” which is comprised of all class councils, ASB Council and Spiritual Life Council, is to enhance the Spirit of Carondelet High School.

Let’s get ready to fly right into the new school year! Be sure to mark your calendars with the following events.

«      Club Fair- September 10

«      Welcome Back Rally @ CHS and Dance @ DLS - September 18

With the 2009-2010 school year finally underway, the sophomore class is energetic and busy as ever. This year the Sophomore Class Council will be focusing on breast cancer awareness along with helping the freshman have a great beginning to their high school experience. On September 27, Carondelet will be participating in the Komen San Francisco Race for the Cure. We hope this event will raise breast cancer awareness throughout the school and we expect many to attend. In early October, Sophomore Council will also be promoting Lee Denim Day in which all the proceeds will go to breast cancer research. This year has already had an awesome start and we can’t wait for the rest of the semester!

Juniors

Junior Council is already busy planning this year's Junior Ring Ceremony. Mark your calendars: this special liturgy will be held in the Garaventa Center on Sunday, November 22 at 10 a.m. We hope all junior students and their families can attend.

Seniors

Senior Council would like to welcome back the senior class and all CHS students!  After an invigorating leadership retreat at San Damiano in June, the senior council members had a restful summer and are ready to begin a new school year.  Plans are in the works for the senior skit that will be performed at the Welcome Back Rally this month.  The council is also excited about the cleverly designed senior t-shirts that were they distributed at Orientation.  The class theme this year is “Larger than Life.”

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we again begin this academic year, it is time for you to experience a typical school day in the life of your daughter.  Please know you are invited to attend our “Back to School Night” on Thursday, September 3, 2009.

Your participation in this event gives you the opportunity to follow your daughter’s program and meet each of her teachers.  De La Salle’s classes will follow the same schedule that evening, allowing you to meet the teachers there as well.

The time schedule and school map for the evening are listed below.  Please print a copy and ask your daughter to fill out her schedule (two copies are on one page in the event that you have more than one daughter at Carondelet High School), and please bring it with you that Tuesday evening.

Please know that there will be heavy traffic on both Treat Boulevard and Winton Drive, so plan to arrive early.  Parking will be available on both campuses.  You might consider carpooling with friends to get the total student experience.  If you park on the neighboring streets, please observe the rules of courtesy.  Our neighbors are anticipating a crowd as they have been advised of this event. Dr. Hurlbut will have a few words for you during the refreshment reception served in the Garaventa Center beginning at 7:00 p.m.  If you haven’t seen the menu for our new café program, Epicurean, you’ll be able to pick that up as well.

All of us are looking forward to seeing you on September 3. Be sure to wear your walking shoes if you need to travel between the two campuses.

Sincerely,

Teri M. Hurlbut, Ed.D

Principal

Cafeteria News

It is my pleasure to introduce Chef Jose Sanchez as the Executive Chef for Carondelet High School.  Chef Sanchez comes from a strong background that includes beginning as a pantry cook for the popular SCORES Restaurant.  He joined Epicurean-Group in August of 2008 as Executive Sous Chef at Holy Names University.  As our business has evolved and grown and changes were made Chef Sanchez quickly and successfully stepped in to facilitate the remainder of the 2008-2009 school year at Carondelet. Additionally, successfully concluding last year with the De La Salle Baccalaureate.  At this time we are excited that he will lead the Carondelet team for the 2009-2010 academic calendar.

Looking forward to a great year,

Jim Julian
