Letter from the
Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
In preparing to write this month’s letter, I came
across something that Elizabeth Lawrence wrote, “Everyone must take time
to sit and watch the leaves turn.” I hope that you get many of
those moments during October. As we wrap up September we
anticipate a busy autumn season.
It is a pleasure to visit classrooms and observe
teachers and their students at work. I find many styles of
teaching and ways of conducting class. The varied use of technology and
other resources are visible in so many of the classes.
I look back on last month’s calendar and am
grateful that we had several occasions to meet - during our
pre-scheduled meetings (Back to School Night and the parent
education meeting on Sexting) and at athletic events. We appreciate
your involvement and support in providing your daughters with a quality
secondary education.
The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet share
their charism with the entire Carondelet High School community. The
aspect of the charism that our ASB officers and the Spiritual Life
Council are developing for our school community is “All of which woman
is capable.” This will be the focal point in 2009-2010 which began in
August and September with various activities and events - class
meetings, the Welcome Rally, the educational assembly on proper
technological use, the Mass of the Holy Spirit, our student-led
Wednesday lunchtime discussions of Three Cups of Tea, and other
activities. Hopefully, these educational opportunities have started the
girls thinking of their own potential career goals.
October’s learning expectation is A Carondelet
student is a responsible steward of life. Our students focused
on becoming Gospel-centered women for the first seven weeks of school.
With their teachers, the girls will brainstorm and discuss possible ways
of becoming stewards for others. Also during October, the Month
of the Rosary, students, faculty and staff will be coming together
voluntarily to recite one decade of the Rosary before school in the
Inner Court. This will begin on October 1 at 7:50am.
Finally, the use of the telephone service,
Blackboard Connect-Ed, will continue this year. From your feedback we
have heard that this was an expedient and efficient way to communicate
quickly. This will be used only when it is absolutely necessary.
Please continue to check the current CHS website
for updates on announcements and calendar events. Our new website is
not quite ready to launch.
I look forward to seeing you soon.
Sincerely,
Teri Hurlbut, Ed. D.
Principal |
From the Assistant Principal
“In each class, a
student earns a grade based on the teacher’s professional assessment of
demonstrated mastery of course content, satisfactory application of
required skills, and effective class participation.” [Student Handbook,
p. 11]
The first quarter
ends on October 16. As you know you are able to monitor your daughter’s
grades regularly now via PowerSchool so there will be NO paper
quarter grades sent. Please keep in mind that first quarter grades are
a type of “progress report” which indicate your daughter’s grade to
date. Although they are not included on student transcripts, these
grades are used in determining eligibility for athletics and certain
co-curricular activities. If the grade is where you want it to be, it
is important to continue your support and encouragement. On the other
hand, if the quarter grade is lower than you expected, it is not too
late to raise it.
Here are some
steps you can take to assist your daughter in achieving her best:
a. Review her CHS
student planner. Are test and quiz dates clearly marked? Are homework
assignments and deadlines noted?
b. Review all
homework. Was it carefully and neatly done? Did your daughter
understand her teacher’s comments and suggestions? Are there any
missing assignments?
c. Review all
quizzes and tests. Your daughter should keep a record of these in her
academic log as directed by her teacher. Are your daughter’s “study
strategies” aimed at her teacher’s expectations? Are there particular
types of questions or problems which continue to be difficult from test
to test?
d. Evaluate all
notes. Are class notes kept together in a notebook or file system?
Does the note-taking method your daughter uses allow for easy and
efficient study?
e. Evaluate study
habits. Is time set aside every day for study? Is the study area
quiet, uncluttered and well-lighted? Does your daughter always have the
materials necessary to complete her homework?
f. Contact the
teacher. Sometimes a telephone conversation will answer your questions;
sometimes a parent-student-teacher conference is more appropriate in
addressing your concerns. In either case, leave a message on our Voice
Mail system and your daughter’s teacher will get back to you as soon as
possible. (To avoid “phone tag”, please specify an appropriate time for
the teacher to return your call.) Of course, the first conversation
should be between your daughter and her teacher – that is often all that
is needed to address a concern.
Finally, if there
is anything Ms. Harris (academic advisor for 9th-10th
grades) Sr. Anne Eugene (12th) or Nancy Libby (11th)
can do to assist you, please do not hesitate to contact us. As partners
with you in your daughter’s education, we will do our best to
help her do her best.
And, last but
certainly not least, a word about the flu ….
The Safety
Committee discussed the advent of the flu season at our last meeting.
And of course there are continuing concerns about the so called swine
flu, technically H1N1. Staying home when symptomatic, AND
enthusiastic, frequent, hand washing seem to be our best defense against
flus and colds.
Please remind your
daughter about the importance of staying home and in bed at the
beginning of flu symptoms. While we are proud of, and encourage our
students’, zeal at learning everything they can and maintaining top
grades, it CANNOT come at the expense of their health. (And in order to
contain any illnesses from spreading, we need those who are ill to stay
“away” from everyone else)!
All teachers are
more than willing to help students get caught up with work missed for
legitimate absences. (Please call Ms. Menconi in the Attendance Office
to let her know when your daughter will be out sick and she will be
happy to notify teachers).

Campus Ministry
It’s not too late to register for our upcoming Mother/Daughter Liturgy
and Brunch on Sunday, October 4. The day begins with Mass
in the gym at 10:30 am, followed by a delicious brunch in the Garaventa
Center. Forms are available in the Campus Ministry Office.
Although we refer to this event “Mother/Daughter,”
if a mother is unavailable to attend, we hope that each
student will feel free to invite an adult woman in her family who
functions as her mentor/nurturer to accompany her. We look forward to
seeing you at our celebration of womanhood.
Sophomore retreats are in full swing with each
Religious Studies class spending a day together at the Diocesan Retreat
Center in Lafayette under the skilled direction of Sr. Joann Heinritz,
Director of CSJ Spirituality and Mission.
Freshmen will be spending a special morning
together on campus Wednesday, October 14 while other
students are taking tests. This morning, designated as Frosh Unity Day,
focuses on introducing students to each other, to the Sisters of St.
Joseph, and to various Carondelet traditions. Additional information
will come to students through their Religious Studies teacher.
This year once again Carondelet will be joining
DeLaSalle in taking twelve of our students on “Ven a Ver” immersion
mission trips to the Salinas area October 14-17 and 21-24. Remember to
pray for us as we minister at Dorothy’s Place and work in the fields
with migrant workers.
Seniors wishing to make a Kairos retreat should
register as soon as possible. Forms are available in the Campus
Ministry Office. Financial assistance is available; please speak to
Mrs. Mondello. Parents whose daughters are scheduled for the November
11-13 retreat should expect to receive an informational mailing from the
Campus Ministry Office by mid October.
Because All Saints Day falls on a weekend this
year, we will have an autumn all school Eucharist on Wednesday, October
21, focusing on a prayer for peace in the world. Dress
Uniform should be worn.
Mrs. Mondello |
Moms in Touch
Do you have a heart for
prayer and a little bit of time to spare? Please consider joining
the “Moms-In Touch” Group at Carondelet. We meet in the Chapel
twice a month on Mondays, after drop-off at 8:20 a.m. For more
information, please contact Audrey Tormey at 943-6885 or Kathy Dasso at
938-1468.

community. Watch for reminders, updates and reservation announcements in the
monthly newsletters and on the CHS website at www.carondeleths.org. You can access the Parents' Association website page right from the CHS homepage. If you would like to be a
part of the planning and preparation for these events, please contact the
chairperson. Here are a few of the upcoming events. We hope to see you!
Mother/Daughter Liturgy and Brunch – Sunday,
October 4, 10:30 AM. You and your daughter are
invited to attend a very special morning liturgy and brunch celebrating the
uniqueness of the mother-daughter relationship. Always a memorable and
rewarding event! Please refer to the attached flyer or CHS website for more
information and ticket ordering.

Parent Association Open House – Thursday,
October 8, 7:00 PM, Inner Court.
Please join us for a Wine and Cheese Reception and meet our Principal, Vice
Principal and the Parents' Association Board members. Learn more about the events
we sponsor and find lots of opportunities to volunteer and form lasting
friendships!
Your participation and support of these events is
greatly appreciated and always welcome. Remember to keep checking our website as we
have many events coming up including our fun-filled annual Crab Feed,
Father/Daughter Liturgy, Spring Parent Speaker Education Night, and Grad Night.
If you have any questions, you are always welcome to
contact me. I will do my best to either answer or direct you to the
appropriate person. Looking forward to seeing you in October! Chris

Community Service
Three seniors were recognized for their
outstanding service at an assembly on Wednesday, September
16. Lauren Bonney, Grace Goodwin, and Sarah Cakley were
awarded certificates and pins from the Jefferson Awards,
Youth Service Initiative Program. Mrs. Jodie Russi,
the Youth Service Initiative Coach for Carondelet presented
the certificates. The parents and other family members of
the girls were on hand to show their support for these young
women who are living models of our theme for the year,
"Doing all of which woman is capable in service to the dear
neighbor."
The Jefferson Awards
Leadership Team has taken on the challenge to raise $9,000
for the Get On The Bus Foundation. If you haven't yet
logged on to www.getonthebus, you are encouraged to
do so in order to understand the needs of the children we
are supporting. Each month students may buy a $2.00 pass to
wear jeans on their class meeting days. The faculty is
supporting our efforts by contributing to Tuesday Salad
Days, either by providing or purchasing a salad made by a
colleague.
Interscholastic
Sports
Fall sports teams have been selected with 213 girls representing CHS on
Cross Country, Golf, Tennis, Volleyball, Water Polo, Cheer and Dance.
Thanks to all the fall sports parents who joined the Athletic
Association on September 2. The $30.00 membership (2 cards) allows two
people entrance to all the EBAL-CHS home Volleyball and Basketball
games FREE! The money is used to buy extra equipment, pay entry fees
for clinics, and grant special requests from the coaches.
Now is the time to check with the Attendance Office concerning current
physicals for the upcoming Winter season of sports. An athlete must
have a current physical (valid for one year from the date given) on file
in order to try out for Basketball or Soccer. If the physical has been
stamped “good for two years”, the school physical form must be
resubmitted to the physician for current clearance. Tryouts begin
Monday, November 9.
Congratulations to
Allison Gargalikis, Madison White
and Chelsea Chenault for being selected to compete on the 2009
National Youth World Cup Swimming team. The girls will be competing in
Sweden and Germany in November. Twenty three girls were selected for the team; it
is phenomenal that 3 were selected from the same high school. Go,
Cougars!
A
special thank you to Club Sport Valley Vista for providing courts (at a
reduced rate) for the tennis team. All home matches will be played at
the Club Sport facility.

Volunteers are Always
Needed!
Below are
listed several of the opportunities for you to volunteer your time to
get those PIP hours out of the way. We still have committee chair
positions open as well as lots and lots of worker bee spots to fill. In
particular, we need parent volunteers to:
Take the
lead for the over-all decorations for the Garaventa Center, the area
outside the Garaventa Center and the Inner Court for the Gala. We have
lots of stuff that can be used, and many people to help, I just need
someone with the vision to implement. I know you are out there . .

the Senior Suitcase . . .this is a really, really easy one. Just need 2
senior parents to sign a few letters and put together a finished product
for the Saturday night Gala as this is a live auction item.
Sandwiches, Scones and
Cookies oh my!
More than 2,000 people will attend the teas . . .we need lots and lots
of sandwiches, cookies and scones. Recipes are given, all you have to
do is put them together in the comfort of your own kitchen and bring
them to school. Not only do you help Visions of Christmas, but you get
PIP hours, too!
Please
email Kathleen Russell at
kathleenrussell43@me.com for information on sandwiches and scones.
Please
email Bernie Mahan at

All Proceeds Benefit the Campus Building Program
Our goal is
to have each of the seven events completely underwritten. To do this,
we need your help. Please consider Visions 2009 Sponsorship
opportunities for you and your workplace. Many companies will match a
donation given by an employee. We are a 501 (c)3 Foundation.
Please
contact Cyndie Harrison at 686-5353 ext. 151,

College and Career
Center News
On the Road to
College….Navigating the Senior Year
The College and Career Center will be hosting a college
informational evening for parents of seniors on Thursday, October 1
from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in the Garaventa Center. The program will include the
most recent information from the counselor conferences including critical
updates on California’s budget. Additionally, we will walk you through the
various stages of the senior year as it relates to the college application
process. Parents will also have an opportunity to ask questions. We encourage
all of you to attend.
Workshop Wednesday for Seniors 10/14
On
Wednesday, October 14 seniors will have the opportunity to attend
five different workshops at Carondelet. Seniors can sign up in the College and
Career Center for the UC, CSU, and independent application workshops as well as
two different essay workshops. The workshops will begin at 8:15 and conclude
about noon.
College Counseling
Mrs.
Breazeale and Mrs. Susich have been counseling seniors through their fourth
period classes regarding college planning, including meeting admission
requirements, completing the application process, requesting and sending
transcripts, and using reference materials in the College and Career Center.
Seniors who have completed their Naviance assignments are also signing up
for individual counseling appointments with their assigned college counselor. On
Thursday, December 10, at 7:00 p.m. there will be a joint Financial
Aid Evening in the Garaventa Center. Please watch for further details in an
upcoming newsletter.
UC and CSU Update
The online
application process for both the University of California and the California
State University systems are expected to open on October 1.
Students may link to both applications from their Naviance accounts.
Prior to submission of UC and CSU applications, students are directed to print
out their applications and bring them to the College & Career Center to be
checked. An application with errors could jeopardize a student’s admission. To
complete the application process for both systems, students must submit official
test scores from either the College Board or from ACT.
The
priority filing period for UC applications is the month of November. Students
may use SAT Reasoning Test or ACT with Writing through the December test dates
to meet the testing requirement. Additionally, applicants to University of
California campuses must submit official scores from any two SAT Subject Tests
from two different subject areas. Please note: the Math I Subject Test does
not
meet the UC requirement.
The
priority filing period for CSU applications begins October 1 and concludes
November 30. Additionally, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, CSU Fullerton, CSU Long
Beach, Cal Poly Pomona, and San Diego State University recommend that students
take SAT Reasoning Test or ACT tests no later than October for admission to
these impacted campuses. Non-impacted CSU campuses will accept testing through
the December test dates.
College T-Shirt Day for
Faculty and Staff
On Friday,
October 23, Carondelet and De La Salle faculty and staff will be
wearing their college t-shirts to promote conversations about college. Students
will have the opportunity to ask teachers and administrators about their
experiences and to learn about a variety of colleges. We will also be having a
trivia quiz for prizes.
Scholarships
A complete
listing of current scholarships is available on Naviance. Seniors will
want to check Naviance regularly as the list is updated frequently when new
scholarships arrive.
AP,
ACT, and SAT Testing Information for the Class of 2009
Please
find results of the AP, ACT and SAT testing that is included in Carondelet’s

From the Personal Counselors
Lately,
the media has been bombarding us with information about how sleep deprived our
teens are. As we know sleep deprivation is linked to memory and concentration
problems, moodiness, hyperactivity, anxiety and depression. In a recent article
in USA Today it was reported that teens who are not asleep before midnight on
school nights are 42% more likely to be depressed than teens who have a 10:00pm
or earlier bedtime. Furthermore teens who are allowed to stay up late are 30%
more likely to have had suicidal thoughts in the last year.
Factors
contributing to teens’ lack of sleep are texting, instant messaging and using
Facebook late into the night. In fact many teens are sleeping with their phones
or laptops and are often awakened in the night to answer these messages. They
are so afraid of missing the opportunity to be socially connected with their
peers. As a result they do not have the opportunity to wind down and relax the
mind in order to fall asleep. As was reported in the Contra Costa Times teens
tend to see sleep-deprivation as a “victimless crime.” What parents can do is
help them to understand cause and effect by talking with them and setting
limits. Have them try getting some phone-free, undisturbed sleep for a week and
evaluate the differences. Ask, “How’s your energy for sports, quizzes and class
work? How’s your ability to handle conflicts with your friends? How do you
really want to treat yourself?"
It is
vitally important for the physical and emotional well-being of our teens that
they learn to strike a balance between staying connected through the use of
technology and taking care of themselves, i.e. getting enough sleep.

Student Activities
CHS WONDERWOMEN!!!
Looking back:
Club Fair 2009
was a fun filled lunchtime event for the entire student body. The students ran
from booth to booth to sign up for their favorite clubs and get information on
events for the 2009-2010 school year. Over 40 clubs from both CHS and DLS were
represented. As usual, the St. Marty’s booth was PACKED and the girls were
really excited to be able to participate in soooooooo many co-curricular
opportunities.
The Spirit Day,
Welcome Rally, and Welcome Dance were a hit as usual!
“All of which
woman is Cape-able” was evident at the Welcome Rally this year. Outstanding
seniors Kelly Calton, Commissioner of Special Events, and Katie Teixeira, ASB
President, led the way along with the rest of ASB and were responsible for
putting together a fantastic rally. The seniors flew in strongly as the Wonder
Women that they are and put together the most amazing skit yet! The classes
cheered their way to a wonderful start to the new school year.
Looking
forward:
SAVE THESE
DATES!

Homecoming is
just around the corner! This week will be filled with lunchtime activities, a
rally (where we will crown the court), and a Power Puff football game to see if
the senior girls can hold onto their title as defending champions.
The Homecoming football game will be Friday night, October 16, and
will include a presentation of the CHS and DLS Homecoming court. The Homecoming
Dance will be held Saturday evening, October 17, at DLS from 7-10
p.m.
St. Marty’s Party
is a fun and festive way to celebrate Halloween. It has been a tradition to
provide a safe “trick or treat” for the children of St. Martin de Porres School of
Oakland. The collection contest is the way in which we gather supplies in order
to make this day one that the children will never forget! Donated items and
money are collected in order to bus the children to Carondelet and send much
needed supplies back to their school. We encourage all students to plan on
participating in this special celebration!
SPECIAL NEEDS FOR
ST. MARTY’S:
New white pillow
cases and pumpkins are needed. The pillow cases are decorated by CHS student
buddies to give to the children when they arrive at CHS for the party. They
serve two purposes - first they are used as goodie bags to carry away their
candy, and secondly they serve as a special keepsake to remember their time with
us here at CHS. Pumpkins are also needed for our pumpkin patch. Each year the
children get to pick a pumpkin from our patch and bring it home with them so
that they can carve their own special jack-o-lantern.
Student
Council
Frosh/Soph Council
With the end of the first quarter drawing near, the Frosh/Soph
Leadership Team has been chosen and everything seems to be running smoothly. The
freshman ladies are adjusting to all the changes that accompany starting high
school and have already been a great addition to the council. Sophomore Council
did an awesome job last month promoting breast cancer awareness throughout the
school as well as participating in some fun events. We were also able to raise a
lot of money for the cause. With the beginning of the year behind us, we will be
helping Junior Council with their Junior Ring Ceremony and preparing for St.
Marty’s Party. The Frosh/Soph Team has so many great ideas for this year, and we
can’t wait to put them into action.
Junior Council
Junior Council
reminds you to mark your calendars for this year’s Junior Ring Ceremony, “One
Sisterhood, One Love.” This special liturgy will be held in the Garaventa Center
on Sunday, November 22, at 10 a.m. We hope all junior students and their families
can attend.
We ask that each
junior submit a few photographs for the slide show which will be presented at
the ceremony. Please send your photos (preferably group shots from your high
school years) to
juniorcouncil11@gmail.com.
Senior Council
Senior
Council performed one of the best rally skits in CHS history to an amazed crowd
at the Welcome Back Rally in September. They acted and danced to a montage of
the skits they performed over the years. The finale included the entire senior
class performing a choreographed dance to the theme song “Larger than Life.”
ASB triggered confetti canons for an explosive ending.
The
Council is now designing sweatshirts for their class and planning the Halloween
Dance. With Homecoming and St. Marty’s on the horizon, October promises to be
an exciting month.
