Letter from the Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The eleventh month of the year is quickly
approaching. The season of autumn is half over and so is the first
semester. We hope that your daughters have been thoroughly energized,
intrigued and challenged during this term.
The PSAT and PLAN tests, the frosh retreat,
Homecoming, and St. Marty’s Party all took place during the last three
weeks in October. Some of our junior and senior students attended one
of the two Ven a ver trips to Salinas, along with faculty members. More
sections of sophomore Religion classes attended a day-long retreat to
Lafayette, and we celebrated an Autumn Mass as a community.
November will be a busy month as well. This
month’s Learning Expectation is "A Carondelet student
is a comprehensive learner". Please remember that we are
observing Veterans’ Day on November 9. Faculty and students will have a
holiday. Our Open House this year is on November 15 from 12:30 – 2:30
pm. If you know of anyone who is interested in learning more about the
program that we offer at Carondelet High School, please invite them to
attend that afternoon. Jefferson Awards will be presented on Wednesday
the 18th, and the Junior Ring Ceremony, a long-standing
beautiful tradition at CHS, will be held on Sunday, November 22 at
10:30am. Senior parents, please know that your daughters will have a
special graduation meeting at 11:45am on November 23rd.
The Thanksgiving break is scheduled from Wednesday,
November 25 through November 29. (This is also the weekend that set-up
occurs in the Garaventa Center for Visions of Christmas. Visions
events begin on December 1). Our classes will resume on Monday, November
30.
I have had the opportunity to view some of the
mapping that our teachers have developed, and I am impressed with the
quality of the Curriculum Maps that have been designed for our classes.
This has been a new endeavor for both Carondelet and De La Salle. Our
teachers have collaborated and devoted many hours towards this focus.
We have really been concerned about student safety
lately, and truly need your help with this. If your daughter is not
involved in an activity after school, we ask that she please go home, or
to a friend’s house. If she is involved in an activity, she
needs to be at the activity with the adult who is in charge. Otherwise,
students waiting to be picked up, are asked to be at the front of the
school building (not behind the gym) where the security guard spends the
bulk of his time. Again, we are sorry if this is inconvenient, but we
place your daughter’s safety as a top priority.
As we approach the Thanksgiving season, let us be
mindful of and thankful for all the wonderful people and events that
have touched and/or changed our lives in some way. I leave you with this
quote - Hem your blessings with thankfulness so they don’t unravel.
May God continue to bless you and your loved ones,
Teri Hurlbut, Ed. D.

From the Assistant Principal
Academics
With the end of the first semester just around the corner, it is
important to remember that the first quarter grades are a type of
progress report. It provides a good indication of the work your
daughter has been doing, but it is not necessarily a guarantee of final
grades. If the quarter grades were acceptable, it is important that you
continue to support your daughter in the fine work she has been doing.
If the quarter grades were less than expected, it is important that you
continue to encourage your daughter as she strives to achieve her best
work.
Sometimes, a senior or junior reevaluates the course choices she has
made for the second semester. Please remember that any requests for
course changes in a student’s second semester schedule must be made
prior to the end of the first semester. A student who is considering
such a request should see Ms. Harris (9, 10), Mrs. Libby (11) or Sr.
Anne Eugene (12) not before December 3 and through December 15. Students should keep in mind
that there might not be any classes available to replace a dropped
class. It is important to note that a student may not withdraw from a
year-long class – there may be negative consequences in applying for
colleges, and the decision should be carefully weighed in discussion
with the College/Career Center. Withdrawal from a year-long class may
be considered by your daughter’s academic advisor in decisions regarding
taking AP and honors courses the following year.
Sophomores and juniors especially will want to keep next year’s course
selections in mind as they finish their first semester. Prerequisites for
advanced courses are determined according to the grades earned in the
first semester.
Safety
Earthquake, Fire, Intruder and Shelter-in-place Drills are conducted
regularly at school. It’s helpful to families to have an already agreed
upon meeting place or phone number to check in IF we ever had a true
crisis and students had to leave school or were kept here for a day or
two. State and Local agencies make recommendations for necessary
storage of food and supplies at home if the crisis is such that stores
and roads are closed. Are you ready?
PARENT INPUT NEEDED
Carondelet is considering adding personal laptops
to the tools we use each day in the classrooms. Currently we are
seeking input from all those that this decision would affect …students,
teachers, parents. We would like to invite any parents/guardians
interested in hearing what a 1 – to – 1 Laptop program MIGHT look like
at CHS, as well as invite your comments, concerns, questions, to a
discussion meeting on Tuesday, November 10 at 7:00 PM in the Inner
Court. Please RSVP to Nancy Libby at
nlibby@carondeleths.org if you are able to attend. At this time, we
are only offering one meeting. |
Dean's Corner
At all dances
sponsored by Carondelet High School, we require our dancing partners
to dance “Face to Face with Space.”! Dancing at other venues may
mean that dancers are allowed to dance what is called “freaking.”
That form of dancing requires a male dancer to face the backside of
a female dancer, and they dance in a grinding rhythmic motion. Some
female dancers during this dance actually put their hands on the
floor while gyrating to the music. This is the reason we ask our
dancer to always be face to face while dancing, which is appropriate
for a Catholic High School dance.

Interscholastic
Sports
Winter sport tryouts will begin November 9 for Basketball
and Soccer. It is important to make sure that a current physical
is on file at the school before tryouts. All paperwork needs to be
turned in to Mrs. Green, A.D. by 3:00 pm November 5.
Winter packets can be picked up in the A.D. Office, Locker Room Lobby,
Main Office or on the CHS Athletics website. Actual tryout times and
locations will be available the week prior to tryouts. Winter Sports
Parent Night will be November 17 at 7:00 pm in the
Garaventa for parents whose daughters have made a team. Sports fees
will be collected at the meeting. If you plan on being a carpool
parent, a copy of your car insurance coverage needs to be on file in the A.D.’s
Office.
Our fall teams are doing well this season. Many of the teams will be
looking forward to playing or running in the NCS Championships. The
Cross Country Varsity Team won the RAM invitational in Daly City
with Heather Cerney coming in first. Kayla Vaughan came in first in the
Junior Varsity event and Emily Balczewski was 1st in the
Frosh/Soph race. At the EBAL center #1, CHS won the Novice race, came 2nd
in the Junior Varsity event and Varsity came in 3rd. Golf
has had a very competitive season. Golfer, Ellese Dias, has helped her
team by coming in 1st in many of the matches. NCS
Championships will take place on November 2 in Arcata, CA. followed by
the CIF Nor-Cal championships November 9 in San Jose and the CIF State
Championship November 18 in Monterey. Tennis, Water
Polo and Volleyball teams are playing hard as the 2009 season comes
to an end.
Congratulations to
Nicole Hood (Cross Country)
for being recognized by the Positive Coaching Alliance as a
Triple-Impact Competitor. “These exemplary student-athletes make a
positive contribution on three levels; Personal Mastery: making oneself
better, Leadership: making one’s teammates better, Honoring the Game:
making the game better.”
Junior Varsity Cheer
received 1st place scores at the Regional USA competition
that took place in Santa Cruz. Both Varsity Dance and Varsity Cheer
will be competing at the State Competition in December.
Chloe Dobbert – Varsity
Tennis is
selected as one of the Contra Costa Times Athletes of the Week.
“Dobbert maintained her undefeated season by picking up wins at No. 1
singles over Northgate, Monte Vista and California. A standout performer
for three years running, Dobbert continues to roll towards the EBAL Singles
Tournament.”

National Merit
Scholarship Program
Each fall over 1.5 million juniors take the Preliminary
SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), and
designations are awarded to the top students in each state based on a
selection index. Carondelet High School is proud to recognize Christine
Connolly, Adrienne Johnson, Danielle Ryba, and Katelyn Williams as National
Merit Semifinalists. Semifinalists are the highest scorers in each of the 50
states and represent less than one percent of each state’s high school
seniors. Meghan Cooney, Megan Dunning, and Christine Tormey are recognized
as National Merit Commended Students for their exceptional academic promise
demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the qualifying test.
Commended students are those who placed in the top 5% of all test takers.
Congratulations also go to Kathryn Teixeira who scored in the top 5% and is
being honored by the National Hispanic Recognition Program as a Scholar.
Adrienne Johnson, who scored in the top 1,600 of Black American high school
students, is recognized as a National Achievement Scholarship Semifinalist.
Senior Nominations
We offer congratulations to
the following seniors who have been nominated to represent Carondelet in
various scholarship programs: Lauren Bonney and Sarah Clakely as nominees
for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards; Courtney Gegg as a nominee
for the Comcast Leaders and Achievement Scholarship; Rachel Stevens as our
nominee for The Olympic Club Foundation Brian Ohleyer Memorial Award; Erica
Radanovich as CHS’s nominee for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award;
Danielle Ryba and Ashley Sheaff for the Danforth Scholars Program at
Washington University in Saint Louis; Kathryn Teixeira for the Herff-Jones
Principal’s Leadership Award; and to Kathryn McCormick who has been
nominated by faculty and selected by her classmates to receive the Daughters
of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award.
College News for Seniors
When submitting
applications online, print and save a copy of the application as well as the
confirmation page. Seniors who are applying to independent colleges must ask
for all teacher and counselor recommendations at least three weeks in
advance. For January or February application deadlines students must request
letters of recommendations from teachers and counselors by December 3rd.
This date is also the deadline for all transcript requests. Students need to
be vigilant regarding deadlines for independent and out-of-state colleges as
well as deadlines for financial aid and scholarships.
UC and CSU Applications
The application deadline
for the University of California and the priority filing deadline for the
California State University system is November 30th. Students
must carefully check their online applications, print them out, and bring
them to their college counselor to be reviewed. It is important not to wait
until the last minute to submit applications.
Financial Aid Night
There
will be joint CHS/DLS Financial Aid Night on Thursday, December 10
at 7:00 pm in the Garaventa Center. A college financial aid officer will
walk parents and student through the Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA). We encourage parents of seniors to attend this important
workshop. This is the only time this information will be presented.
College News for Juniors
We encourage all juniors
to use Naviance our online college connection. Students can
link to
Naviance through the Carondelet web site /Curriculum / College & Career.
On the Naviance site, students can access the scholarship list and
the complete list of college representatives who are visiting CHS and DLS,
as well as those colleges who are holding evening or weekend sessions in our
area for students and parents. Students should also take advantage of
the search features and use the scattergrams, which give a history of
Carondelet students who have been admitted to colleges from the last 6
years.
College News for all
Students and Parents
On the Carondelet website
through Curriculum / College & Career, we have posted answers to the most
Frequently Asked Questions, including answers to general questions, on
standardized testing (PLAN, PSAT, ACT, SAT Reasoning Test, SAT Subject
Tests), and on the college application process. The College & Career webpage
also has information about Method Test Prep for ACT and SAT preparation
which Carondelet has paid a site license for all Carondelet students to use.
Students access Method Test Prep through their Naviance
accounts /Test Preparation. To begin, students take an assessment test to
determine a course of study. If students have trouble logging on to
Naviance, they should come to the College & Career Center.

she encounters "curiouser and curiouser" characters, like a talking
caterpillar, a Mad Hatter, three queens, and a grinning cat, to name a
few. This is not Disney’s version, but a darker interpretation of these
fantastic tales. Running time: 1 hr, 30 min.
