Letter from the Principal

Dear Parents,

We are approaching the close of the 2008-2009 school year.  It seems like only yesterday when I was writing my welcome letter!  I certainly hope this has been a great school year for your daughter, filled with exceptional academic, athletic, spiritual and co-curricular opportunities.  We are always striving to improve our programs and your input is always encouraged.  Next year, our faculty members, in conjunction with the faculty from De La Salle, will be trained in Curriculum Mapping in order to more carefully peruse the scope and sequence of the courses in each discipline.  Most of the high schools in the Oakland Diocese have begun to implement this program and have found wonderful results in the delivery of the curriculum and assessment of their students.  Training of the Curriculum Mapping Core Team will begin this month.  The training will continue for all the other teachers in August.  Staff development days will be focusing on this effort during the course of the school year.

Congratulations to the student-athletes for an exciting spring season and to those who performed or exhibited during the April Winton Arts Festival!

The Learning Expectation for the final two months of school is A Carondelet student is a woman of creativity, leadership and service.  We hope that during the months of May and June, your daughters seek the opportunity to be creative, demonstrate leadership qualities and be of service to those less fortunate in our community.

The class schedules will be available to the students prior to the last week of school.  Please review this carefully with your daughter before she leaves school for summer vacation and before she purchases any textbooks.  We encourage texts to be purchased from each other if someone in your carpool or neighborhood has the texts that your student may need.  In addition, texts may be purchased through www.myschoolbooksstore.com, starting July 7, 2009.

This is the last newsletter that you will receive online this school year.  The next newsletter will be online as well in September.  Our office will be open as usual for the remainder of June, however, hours in July will be a bit limited.  We will be closed July 1 – 5 and reopen on July 6.  Office hours will be 9am to 2pm.  Normal office hours will resume, beginning on August 3.  Please know that the teachers, deans and counselors will be on summer vacation, beginning June 12.  I hope this information helps should you have any questions or concerns.  Otherwise, they will return on August 11.

As I finish up this letter, I would like to thank you for your support this year by your attendance at parent meetings, fundraisers, parent/teacher conferences, and athletic, academic and/or cultural events.   Your presence makes a positive impact on your daughter’s overall educational experience.

Before we know, summer vacation will be upon us.  Senior parents, we keep you in our thoughts and prayers as you begin the next stage of your student’s life.  For those parents whose daughters are returning, we look forward to seeing you in the fall.  The Welcome Back BBQ is slated for Sunday, August 16.  Please mark your calendars for this fun event.  More details will be forthcoming.

Wishing you a summer with plenty of time to relax with family and friends,

Sincerely,

Teri Hurlbut, Ed. D.

Principal

The scheduling process for 2009 – 2010 is nearly complete.  We have checked prerequisites and graduation requirements.  We have obtained departmental and deans’ recommendations and have determined course availability.    Schedules will be sent out during the second week of June with directions on requesting any changes, summer reading lists and purchasing textbooks.  Please follow all procedures carefully.  Final assignments will be based on space availability as determined by the administration, graduation requirements, and course prerequisites.  At the request of the administration or deans, students may be scheduled only on the Carondelet campus.

Report cards will be sent out during the second week of June.  Students will be able to see their final grades as well as final exam grades on PowerSchool by June 9 at 9:00 a.m.

Students who will be enrolling in summer school classes, either to remediate grades or complete prerequisites for desired courses, MUST have prior permission from their academic advisor in order for credit to appear on their transcript.  Summer school is required for make up of any “F” grades earned during the school year.  If this is a possibility, please enroll in summer school now. Students who earn “D” grades may wish to retake courses in summer school as Colleges and Universities will not accept “D” grades in entrance required courses.   Local public schools offer limited summer school courses in many areas and are not required to accept private school students for enrollment.  DVC, LMC and a variety of online courses (as outlined in the student planner) are options to fulfill summer school.  Please ask your daughter to see her advisor if she needs assistance with summer school registration.

Deans' Corner
  1. Body Piercing – Pierced jewelry is allowed only in the ears. Please do not allow your daughter to come to school with her eyebrows, nose or other body parts pierced. Your daughter will not be permitted to class if she attends school with these body ornaments.

  2. Parking structure - There have been some close calls within the parking structure. Please do not drop off or pick up your daughter in the parking structure at any time during the school day.

  3. Warm weather – Your daughters must stay in their uniforms while school is in session. This includes while they are taking classes at De La Salle. The teachers from DLS have commented on the girls’ attire and their uniform attire, or lack thereof, while on the DLS campus.

  4. Cell phones – Please do NOT call or text message your daughters during the school day on their cell phones. Students must have written permission signed by a parent/guardian to leave campus. This must be submitted to Mrs. Menconi in the Attendance Office BEFORE leaving campus. Mrs. Menconi will issue an official pass to leave. Students may be put on probation if they leave without a pass from the Attendance Office.

  5. Driving in the neighborhood - Please slow down when driving in the neighborhood. We understand that your daughter wants to be on time for class but this should not be at the risk for someone to get hurt.  If your daughter is late, have her come to the Attendance Office to check in.

  6. De La Salle - DLS has requested that you do not pick up your daughter on their campus. Carondelet and De La Salle do the best job possible to relieve the traffic congestion. Please be patient when picking up your child or pick them up at a later time when the traffic is not as busy.

Thanks for your support.

Campus Ministry

Our Lenten Alms campaign on behalf of Women for Women International, raised over $5300!

Beginning in early May, we will be accepting registrations for next year’s senior Kairos retreats. Class of 2010 parents, please be aware that retreats fill up fast. It is recommended that students not make their retreat during their school sport season; so if your daughter must attend a particular retreat it will be important for her to register this May to insure getting the particular spot she needs. Dates for next year’s Kairos retreats are: September 16-18, November 11-13, February 3-5, and April 19-21. Total cost of the retreat is $250; $50 of which is due at time of registration. This retreat experience is considered by our school community to be a significant and important piece of your daughter’s Carondelet experience. Financial assistance is available for students who otherwise could not attend the retreat. Requests for such assistance can be directed to the Campus Minister, Mrs. Mondello at Ext. 167.

Parents of Seniors—We hope to see you at the Baccalaureate Mass on Thursday, May 21, 7pm at St. Francis of Asissi Church on Oak Grove Road. Following the Mass there will be a reception back at the Garaventa Center. This is always a wonderful opportunity to talk with families and friends of your graduate before the rush of Commencement. We hope to see you there.

Mrs. Mondello

Father/Daughter Liturgy

Many thanks go out to Rosanna Gastello for chairing a wonderful Father/Daughter Liturgy on March 8th! Our daughters were able to share some special time bonding with the most important men in their lives during a spirit filled morning.

Grad Night is Just Around the Corner, But You Still Have Time to Earn 2008–2009 PIP Hours!

Volunteers are needed to help ensure this night is a success. Please consider donating your time and talent to this exciting event. Volunteer forms are available in the school office. If you have any questions or would like more information about volunteering, please contact CHS co-chairs Mary V. Atkins or Luisa Carnathan at chsdlsgradnight09@yahoo.com and please put “volunteer” in the subject line.

We are also in need of gift card donations in small amounts like $5 or $10 for places like Starbucks, Borders, gas stations, etc. You may place your gift cards or donations in an envelope marked “Grad Night Gift Card Donation” and drop it by the Main office. If you have questions about donations, please contact Dorothy Kennon at chsdlsgradnight09@yahoo.com and please put “donation” in the subject line.

Interscholastic Sports

Congratulations to the Carondelet Basketball for being the Nor-Cal, Division II, Champions and competing at the State Championship in Sacramento.  Helping the West to win: Hilary Rosette and Alyssa Flores were selected to play in the East/West annual Safeway Charities ALL-Stars game.

The Varsity Basketball team and the Varsity Dance team received the highest goal of educational athletics, combining outstanding academic performance with interscholastic athletic participation.  With the grade point average of 3.47 and 3.49, the teams earned the NCS Scholastic Girls Basketball and Dance Championship Team Award for winter, 2009.  This award is presented to the top three NCS varsity teams in each division in each sport with the highest composite GPA of 3.0 or above.  Recognizing that there are 168 schools in the NCS, this is indeed an outstanding achievement!

Dance tryouts will be May 11-13 in the gym, 5:00- 8:00 p.m.  Cheer tryouts will be May 18-20 from 5:30-8:00 p.m.  Fittings will be held on May 22 at 3:30 p.m., for all teams.  A dance/cheer information meeting took place for incoming freshmen on April 21.

Spring Sports are doing well.  Varsity Girls and Frosh/Soph girls took 2nd place at the CHS/DLS Super 7 Track/Field Invitational.  The CHS/DLS Swimming Invitational was well attended.  These are two large events and continue to be successful because so many parents, from both schools, volunteer their time to help out.  Way to go, parents!

Swimming competed at the Jesuit Invitational in Sacramento; Varsity took first place and Frosh/Soph placed second. Track/Field placed 2nd out of 30 teams at the Skyline Invitational.

Fall Sports begin August 17, 2009

The Athletic Department would like to remind parents that if your daughter plans to try out for a fall sport, she should take the required physical during the summer months before the start of the 2009-2010 school year.  Physicals are good for one year from the date of the exam.  If the physical has been cleared for two years, it MUST be re-stamped and dated by the physician stating that they are cleared to participate in competitive sports.  Physical forms may be picked up in the Main Office, Athletic Office or on the CHS website under Sports.

Volleyball Open Gym for girls interested in trying out for the CHS volleyball teams will be held August 3 -6 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm and August 10-13 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm.  ALL CHS students are welcome.  This is a time to practice your skills and to get to know some of your fellow athletes.  NCS/EBAL open gym rules will be followed during this time.

Visions of Christmas

With the end of the school year quickly approaching, you may be thinking summer vacation . . . in the development office we are thinking Visions of Christmas

Please consider joining the team of parents who plan and implement the largest fundraising event that benefits Carondelet High School.  With six separate events in as many days, we need all your talents and experiences to help make the 20th Anniversary for Visions of Christmas even more successful than last year.  As with any school, each year people come and people go leaving a variety of vacancies on the committee.  This year we are especially looking for someone (or a couple of people) to chair the Boutique.  I know someone is out there who would love to organize this big money maker for Visions and CHS.  The buying process is just beginning, so if this is an area you like to participate in, please call me soon.  We need you!

We have an opening this year for a raffle tree sponsor.  Perhaps your family (or a couple of families) would like to participate in that way.  Please call me and I can give you the details.

Participating in Visions of Christmas is a great way to meet Carondelet parents as well as supporting your daughter’s school.  Last year, over 2,500 guests and 200 volunteers experienced Visions of Christmas.   We expect the same this year.  We need creative people and implementers, leaders and followers.  All are welcome.

Please call Cyndie Harrison in the Development Office at 925-686-5353 ext. 151 or Marybeth Anicich at ext. 153 for information on how you can help with this extraordinary event.  Just think how lovely it will be to have all your PIP hours completed before Christmas!

Supporting Carondelet in a Challenging
Economic Environment

You might wonder why, given the state of the economy, you are continuing to receive requests to make a donation to the Annual Appeal and support Visions of Christmas and the Golf Tournament.  The simple answer is that now, more than ever, the School needs to deliver to your daughters the programs and facilities that you have come to expect from a Carondelet education at a tuition level that is in the mid-range for Bay Area Catholic schools.  Supplementing tuition revenues with event and fund-raising income spreads the financial burden over the broader school community of alumnae and their parents, friends, charitable foundations and businesses, and allows those who have resources available to support CHS to receive some tax relief.

Even in a challenging economy, there are ways to support Carondelet with minimal impact on your pocketbook.  Using E-Scrip, SchoolPop (now known as One Cause) or Lucky/SaveMart’s SHARES card costs you nothing, but directs dollars to go to the school.  Searching the web using GoodSearch (www.GoodSearch.com) generates about a penny per search for CHS.  You can also encourage other family members and friends to use these programs on Carondelet’s behalf.

If your employer provides a charitable matching gift program, you can double and sometimes triple whatever you can afford to give.  You can divide a gift into manageable installments by going to the school website, clicking on the “Donate Now” button, and setting up a secure recurring payment plan.  If you are already a regular United Way or workplace campaign donor, you can designate Carondelet as the recipient of all or a portion of your payroll deduction gifts.  You can donate that vehicle that has become a maintenance headache.  If you are employed by Chevron, the Chevron Humankind Program will provide Carondelet with a $500 grant if you complete your required 20 PIP hours (or $1,000 if you complete at least 40 hours).

For more information about any of these methods, please contact Pat Larsen, Director of Development at 686-5353 x150 or plarsen@carondeleths.org, or check out the Development section of the school website.

Academic Awards and Senior Scholarship Evening

We are pleased to announce that our annual Awards Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 12 at 7:30 p.m. You will receive an invitation in the mail if your daughter will be receiving an award. We kindly request that all families who receive an invitation, respond by returning the RSVP card included in the invitation. We are looking forward to this special event, when we honor students from 9th through 12th grades for their academic achievements in subject areas and for academic excellence with a cumulative 4.0 GPA.

Our graduating seniors will be recognized for their membership in the California Scholarship Federation as well as the National Honor Society, and for their civic achievements. Seniors will also be honored for the scholarships that they have been offered by the college that they will be attending.

These awards are meant to be a surprise. Please do not call the school to ask what award(s) your daughter will be receiving. School personnel do not have this information, or may not share it with you.

Students should remember to dress appropriately. Dressing properly shows respect for those students receiving hard-earned awards. Students should refrain from wearing flip- flops, very short skirts or dresses, or revealing outfits. Also, they should refrain from chewing gum.

We urge you to stay for the entire program. It is distracting and disrespectful to have members of the audience leaving while students are receiving awards or while presenters are speaking at the microphone. We look forward to seeing you at this special evening.

Senior Counseling

Seniors who are going on to Diablo Valley College were given assessment tests in both English and Math on March 24. Students who missed the test should contact the DVC Assessment Center at 685.1230 ext. 2545 or refer to the information on the website for drop-in testing dates and times at www.dvc.edu/admissions/assessmentcenter.htm.

If students will enroll at a CSU campus and have not fulfilled the ELM/EPT requirement by way of their SAT, ACT or AP scores, the May 2nd ELM/EPT Placement test is the final test date to complete this requirement. Most students choose to take the tests locally at CSU East Bay at either the Concord or Hayward campus. Students can link to ELM/EPT information from Naviance or go directly to www.testing.csuhayward.edu.

Seniors who will attend UC campuses and who have not fulfilled the Analytical Writing requirement by way of their SAT, ACT or AP scores must register to take the exam on Saturday, May 9th. Information is available online at www.ucop.edu/sas/awpe.

The “It’s our time now” wall, outside of the College and Career Center, features “clocks” individually designed by our seniors with their names and the colleges that they will be attending. Please encourage your daughter to participate!

Parents of seniors may enjoy reading a book called Letting Go: A Parents’ Guide to Understanding the College Years by Karen Levin Coburn and Madge Lawrence Treeger.

 Junior Counseling

Juniors and their parents attended a College Preview Night on April 23, in the Garaventa Center. Representatives from the University of California, California State University, Community College, and independent and out-of -state colleges spoke about the unique features of their institutions. The college representatives also addressed a variety of topics including admissions cycles, the role of the parent, and how students can best present themselves in their applications.

Online registration for 2009/2010 college entrance examinations for next fall will soon be available for the ACT at www.act.org and for the SAT and SAT Subject Tests at www.collegeboard.com. Avoid the rush and register now for fall dates. Please note that a number of CSU campuses, including Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo, CSU Fullerton, CSU Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona, and San Diego State have recommended that students take SAT Reasoning Tests or ACT Assessment tests no later than October.
Junior student-athletes who hope to compete in NCAA Division I or Division II sports should register with the NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse in the spring of the junior year. The Clearinghouse operates a separate web site at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net, which maintains and processes all of the initial eligibility certifications. The Clearinghouse provides certification of eligibility by examining the student’s high school transcript and test scores. Students should follow the directions for filling out the online form, including printing out the release forms authorizing our registrar, Mrs. Missaggia, to send transcripts to the NCAA Clearinghouse. The Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete which contains the eligibility and recruiting guidelines is also available online.
In April, juniors worked on “Getting Started on the Road to College,” and working with the college counselors in the computer lab. Topics covered include a timeline for the college application process, preparing for college applications and entrance testing, and conducting detailed college searches. Juniors will be encouraged to sign up for individual college counseling appointments after they have completed their college counseling assignment, junior questionnaire and “About Me” sections of Naviance. Access to Naviance is available through the CHS website. Please remember that colleges use email to communicate with students and the email address should be appropriate.

Summer Programs

Information on summer academic and enrichment programs is available on Naviance and in the College and Career Center. Students, particularly juniors, may want to explore the possibility of participating in a volunteer activity or summer program.

Community Service News

The leadership team of the Jefferson Awards - Deloitte Youth Service Initiative at Carondelet hosted the annual Regional Competition of  the Jefferson Awards for schools in the Bay Area on March 5, 2009, after school.   Students from Carondelet, De La Salle, Livermore and Los Lomas presented a summary of their service programs for a panel of judges from Deloitte.  Katlynn Lawrence, Kaylyn Dowd, Justine Bie and Courtney Gegg made a PowerPoint presentation of  the Carondelet students' impressive service accomplishments.  Jack Russi, the coach for De La Salle, was in attendance as well as Dina Bartello, the regional director of the Jefferson Awards, Youth Service Initiative.  The winning school from each region will compete at the close of that workshop and be named as the Bay Area winner.  The school receiving that honor will be invited to Washington, D.C. to receive national attention as an outstanding school of service.

From the Personal Counselors

We realize that the economic crisis has touched most people in some way or another.  Families are cutting back on spending, many people have dealt with job loss, and some are struggling to keep their homes.  This has put a great deal of stress on parents as well as their teens.  Adults tend to get preoccupied with income, or lack of income, the monthly bills, and the family budget.  In trying to provide for their family, they may forget that tough times have an emotional as well as a financial impact on everyone in the family.

Teens typically experience the tough times secondhand through Mom and Dad.  They may or may not understand the emotions their parents feel.  They may need help in finding ways to cope and contribute in this new situation.

The key is for grownups to take an optimistic approach and to focus on what they have rather than what they don’t have.  Some tips include:

·                    Start by helping yourself first.  Eat right and get plenty of rest and exercise.  Encourage your teen to do the same.

·                    Communicate.  Share what’s happening and how you feel in an age-appropriate way with your teen.  Too much information may cause undue anxiety.  Listen and support others in your family.

·                    Work together to economize, conserve and utilize resources.   Turn off lights, TVs or other electronics not in use.  Take shorter showers, utilize leftovers, and eat more meals at home.  Review the costs of cable, phone, internet, newspaper, and magazine usage with the family.   Talk about family spending priorities.

·                    Try to keep major changes to a minimum.  If that is unavoidable, teens need to be prepared.  Parents should talk to teens about the changes to give them time to adjust.

·                    Spend time together doing low-cost or no-cost activities like taking a walk, reading a book, playing cards or a board game, etc…..

·                    Remind your teen that you are working together as a family and they are not alone.

·                    Remember to have fun as a family.

“EVERY 15 MINUTES”

On March 16 and 17, the juniors and seniors of Carondelet and De La Salle,  experienced the simulated drunk driving program “Every 15 Minutes.”  Due to the collaboration of both schools' administration; teachers, staff, city, county, state agencies, and many dedicated parent volunteers, the program was a success.  On Monday the juniors and seniors of both observed a simulated car crash.  On Tuesday, they attended a memorial, while the freshmen and sophomores attended an assembly, where they listened to a motivational speaker address making good choices.  We owe a lot of gratitude to more people than we can list. We hope that watching the students’ responses was enough thanks for all the hours that they put in. The old saying “it takes a village” was very apparent throughout these two days on both campuses.

Thank you to everyone who supported the “Every 15 Minutes” program!

Leslie Sitov and Laurie Ervin       Co-coordinators.

DRIVERS EDUCATION

Drivers Ed will be offered this summer beginning Monday, June 15, from noon to 5 p.m. through Friday, and Saturday, June 20 from 8 a.m.-noon at DLS. You must be 15 years old. Sign up with Mr. Bradford in Room 201 at DLS.

MODERN LANGUAGE

The Modern Language students have been busy this spring with a variety of projects, which include creating PowerPoint presentations and websites on the regions of France and Spain, learning about Spanish-speaking countries, writing children’s books, and presenting on environmental issues, to name a few. The French teachers recently took a group of CHS and DLS students to a highly-competitive oral French contest in Berkeley. The students, along with high school students from eight other East Bay schools, competed by extemporaneously answering questions on domestic and international current events. Senior Jessica Badrous won third place in the final round – a first for our students! The Spanish Honor Society made Easter bags for the girls who live in La Gloria Orphanage in Mexico for the second year in a row. Spanish Honor Society is also worked on having every student who is a member of the society submit either a poem, short story, drawing or photograph to the publication of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica called Albricias by mid-April. Perhaps we’ll see their published work later this year!

WORK PERMIT NEWS

If a student is injured while at the volunteer site, she is entitled to workman's compensation. This is a state-wide law and everyone who is under the age of 18 is required to comply.
