Letter from the Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We hope that you enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends.  This seems to be the time of year when the weeks just roll right into each other.  Our winter sports have begun, and with the new month we focus on a new Learning Expectation.  This month’s LE is A Carondelet student is a respectful woman.  It is our hope that our students recognize and understand the many ways in which they can be respectful towards others.

Our spirit of thanks, of giving and of doing for others continues.  The beginning of December is always a busy time at Carondelet High School.  As you sit and read this newsletter, our Visions of Christmas is underway, beginning on December 1 with the first of four Holiday Teas and the Preview Night.  We hope to see you at one of the events.  The following week, we will be celebrating the Feast of the Immaculate Conception at Mass on the 8th, and holding our combined Christmas Concert in the Hofmann Center at De La Salle, on the 9th.   As usual, your daughters have been very thoughtful and generous towards others in the larger community experiencing a difficult time.  The students continue to work toward their yearlong financial goal for Get on the Bus and our Advent Giving Tree by collecting gifts of socks, mittens and scarves for the women’s shelter, A Friendly Place, cereal for the Monument Crisis Center, school supplies for Costano School and trinkets for the St. Martin de Porres Boutique.

Later this month, from the 15th to the 17th, our students will be experiencing their first finals of the school year.  Our semester ends on December 18.  Please continue to periodically check your daughter’s PowerSchool account and offer her words of encouragement to work with her teachers on “unfinished business” prior to the end of the semester.  Your supportive role is vital to your daughter’s academic success.

I hope this season of Advent has blessed you and filled you with great anticipation of the Baby Jesus and His wondrous ways.  Your emails, phone calls and conversations at various times and at various events have enriched and challenged me to be “at the top of my game”.  Please know that your input is valued.

I close this letter and this year of 2009 with a quote – Your friendship is a glowing ember through the year, and each December from its warm and living spark, we kindle flame against the dark and with its shining radiance light our tree of faith on Christmas night.

May God continue to bless each of you, your families and your friends in the coming year.  My prayer for you is good health, happiness and prosperity.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Teri Hurlbut, Ed. D.

Students are expected to be in class on final exam days.  Students may not take final exams early.  Special circumstances (e.g., illness, extended medical absence or bereavement, but not vacations, college-initiated recruiting or admissions visits) may be considered by the teacher in consultation with the Assistant Principal.

Coming to class on time and prepared is always essential, but even more so during Finals Week.  Parents should be especially diligent that their daughters get adequate sleep and a nutritious breakfast.

It is important to keep grades in perspective.  It is gratifying to receive all “A’s”, and maintaining an acceptable GPA for college applications is a worthwhile goal – but at what expense?  A cheerful heart should not be sacrificed in the pursuit of high grades.  The young woman who is generous and kind and shares her faith in the service of others should not feel like a failure because she receives less than perfect marks on her report card.  Help your daughter understand that grades merely reflect an evaluation of her work in class; they do not indicate her worth in life.

Nevertheless, if a student – especially a senior – should earn a grade of “D” or “F” at the semester, it is important to remember that college eligibility may require that these grades be remediated.  Please consult Mrs. Breazeale or Mrs. Susich regarding college eligibility.  A grade of “D” is considered a passing grade for CHS graduation, but is not accepted by four-year colleges for admissions eligibility.

Trying one’s best, challenging oneself to exceed expectations, stretching limitations, and expanding horizons are the true measures of success -- and the best ways to prepare for finals.

REPORT CARDS

Please remember:  Second semester classes begin on Monday, January 11, 2010.  Final First Semester grades will be available on Power School on Thursday, January 7 at 9:00 AM.  (Please do not email a teacher questioning a First Semester grade until AFTER Thursday, January 7 at 9:00 AM).

God’s continued and special blessings to you and your loved ones.  Wishing you and your families a safe, joyous and sacred holiday season.

Deans' Corner

1.    Visions of Christmas - Visions of Christmas is the week of Monday Nov. 30 through Friday December 4, 2009.  The schedule is as follows:  Classes begin at 8:15 AM on all five days.  Sixth period will be dismissed at 1:40 PM, Tuesday through Friday.  Please note if your daughter has a 7th period class she will be required to attend 7th period Monday through Thursday.  Because of the limited number of parking spaces we ask all students to leave campus as soon as their academic classes are completed, so that the guests coming to the Teas will have a place to park.   Clubs and councils will not meet this week.  If you refer to the Carondelet Website the schedule for the week is also posted.

2.   7th Period - Many of your daughters have 7th period.  Please understand that 7th period is part of the academic school day.  If your daughter has an appointment during 7th period or anytime during the school day she must have permission to leave.  Permission to leave means having your daughter bring a note to the Attendance Office.  This note must be from the parent or guardian requesting that their daughter be excused.  Please indicate on the note your daughter’s name, student I. D. number and the date and time she is to be excused.  Mrs. Menconi must receive a note prior to leaving school in order to follow the proper procedure.

3. Cell phones – Thank you for your cooperation with the cell phones.  There is a noticeable difference when you are not using your phone while driving your car.  We want to keep your daughters as safe as possible, and this seems to be working.

4.  Parking Structure - For safety reasons please do not drop your daughter off in the parking structure in the morning.  In the afternoon please do not enter the parking structure from the exit lane.  We have had some close calls and want to make sure everybody is safe.

Have a Safe and Happy Holiday Season.

Visions of Christmas

The Carondelet Family is AMAZING!  Your support for Visions of Christmas is inspiring.  Thank You.

We hope you are able to attend at least one event at Visions of Christmas this year.  The Taste of Visions on Tuesday, December 1, at 6:30 PM is a great way to experience Visions.  This event is free to the community and no reservation is required.  At this writing, there are still some spaces available for Wednesday, Dec. 2 and Thursday, Dec. 3 teas; The Gala on Saturday, Dec. 5; and Breakfast with Santa on Sunday Dec. 6.  Please call Mary Frevele at 686-5353 ext. 155 ASAP if you would like to attend one of these events.

Everyone is eligible to participate in the Tree Drawing.  Tickets are available in the Development Office and at all Visions events and are priced at 1 for $5, 5 for $20, 15 for $50 and 35 for $100.  Wouldn’t you love to get a call on Sunday saying you are a winner for one of the fabulous VOC trees!!!??

For the first time, this year the student leadership council at Carondelet is hosting a tree.  Please see Sarah Daniel’s article for more information.

Below are a few Live Auction items that will be available to those who attend The Gala:

·         Dinner for up to 12 people catered at “The Zone.”  A private outdoor sports bar located on a very special piece of property in Alamo, “The Zone” sports four large plasma screen t.v.s plus a barbeque and grill, making it the perfect spot to entertain friends while watching a special sporting event(s), like the Super Bowl or the Indy 500 or the World Cup.  With four screens, you could even watch basketball, football and hockey at the same time.  Dinner will be served by Bay Area sports personalities.

·         An autographed and framed Jerry Rice picture.  Be the first on your block to have this soon-to-be hall of famer in your sports collection.

·         An autographed and artistically framed Michael Jordan Jersey.

·         An absolutely pristine custom built bicycle.  You can lift it with your pinkie.

·         Dinner for 12 at the popular Flemings Steak House in Walnut Creek.  Great idea for a birthday or anniversary celebration.

·         A wheelbarrow filled with interesting wine and great books donated by the Carondelet Faculty and Staff.

·         Senior Tree resplendent with gobs of gift cards to help your daughter get settled on her first year away from home.

Other highlights include: cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the Inner Court, Glen Kuiper emceeing and Cover 2 Cover playing a wide selection of tunes for your dancing and listening pleasure.  Cover 2 Cover was simply fabulous last year.

We are still accepting monetary donations that help us to underwrite the costs associated with Visions of Christmas.

Thank you all for your generosity and support.

Please call Cyndie Harrison at 686-5353 ext. 151 or Marybeth Anicich at ext. 153 if you have any questions.

Golf 2010 – April 26th at Diablo Country Club

Calling all Golfers!  Visions will be over . . .moving onto Golf.

Save the date and join us as we plan another fun-filled day swinging clubs in the sunshine while raising funds for your daughter’s school.  The Tournament this year will be held on April 26th at Diablo Country Club.  Please consider joining the Golf Committee.  Your participation is what makes this event successful.  For more information please call Marybeth Anicich at 925-686-5353 ext. 153.

College and Career Center News

Financial Aid Night December 10

Parents mark your calendars for the joint CHS/DLS Financial Aid Night Thursday, December 10th at 7:00 PM in the Garaventa Center.  A Financial Aid Officer from the University of San Francisco will give an overview of the different types of financial aid.  He will also walk parents and students through the federal (FAFSA) and state financial aid forms (Cal Grant). This is an important meeting for all senior parents, regardless of whether or not you think you qualify for financial aid. Please note, financial aid deadlines and forms vary by college. To access information about deadline and forms required, go to the individual college’s financial aid / scholarship web pages.

In preparation for filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the student and one parent should each apply now for a FAFSA pin number at www.pin.ed.gov.  The FAFSA will be available January 1, 2010 with drop-down help menus at www.fafsa.ed.gov.  Online financial aid help is also available through Tuition Coach on Naviance.

Letters of Recommendations

Seniors are expected to ask teachers or counselors for letters of recommendation at least three to four weeks prior to the deadline.  Please note:  December 3rd is the deadline for packets to be given to teachers and advisors/counselors for all applications due in December or January. Seniors needing assistance may come to the College & Career Center. Templates for teacher and advisor/counselor requests for recommendations are posted on student Naviance page / document library.   Refer to Red Binder pages 37-39 for instructions. Please remember school will be closed from December 18 to January 10 for the Christmas holidays.

SAT and ACT Scores

Seniors are responsible for sending their official ACT and/or SAT scores directly to colleges. To send scores, seniors log on to www.act.org  or to www.collegeboard.com .  Please be aware that it can take 4 to 6 weeks for scores to arrive. A credit card is needed to pay for such transactions.

Mid-Year Transcripts

Seniors with applications to private colleges will need to requests mid-year transcripts (grades from 1st semester senior year).  Beginning December 3rd, requests are made from Naviance / my colleges / request transcripts /check mid-year transcripts.  Mid-year reports are not sent to University of California and California State University campuses.

Email Notifications

Most colleges and universities communicate with students via email, often in bulk messages. Not only is it important for seniors to check email frequently, but also to check spam or junk mail folders for important information sent by the colleges.  If a student changes her email address after she has applied, she must notify the colleges. We request seniors bring a copy of their email notifications of admissions decisions to the College & Career Center.

Junior Counseling

Juniors and their parents are invited to a very important meeting to officially begin the “Road to College” and to receive PSAT results.  Topics will include:

·  Interpreting PSAT test results.

·  Reviewing college-planning calendars for junior and senior years.

·  Receiving information on how to select a college.

·  Learning about required college entrance tests.

·  Reviewing admission requirements for the California State University, University of

   California system, and independent colleges.

·  Introducing Naviance, our online college counseling connection.

·  Understanding the different forms of financial aid.

You may choose to attend one of two dates:  The first session will be held on Thursday, January 14 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.  The second session will be held on Saturday, January 16 from 10:00 to 11:30 AM.  Both sessions offer the same material and will be held in the Garaventa Center. We strongly encourage all juniors and their parents to attend one of these sessions. They are the first in a series of four different workshops for parents on the college application process.

Student Activities

Leadership News-

The CIA (Cougars In Action), which is made up of all the student leadership councils, will be sponsoring a Giving Tree – “Dear Santa” – in conjunction with Visions of Christmas.  We will be receiving donations for the Carondelet “Giving Tree” from November 30 – December 11.  As a way to spread holiday spirit, the Carondelet community will be donating to four worthy organizations: Monument Crisis Center (which is in need of diapers and cereal), St. Martin De Porres (which is in need of small gifts for the holiday boutique), Costano School (which is in need of school supplies, toys, games, and books), and A Friendly Manor (which is in need of hats, gloves, and socks).  There will be two trees – one in the Inner Court for the students to donate to, and the other in the Garaventa Center for guests attending any of the Visions events.  These two trees will serve the same purpose as a way to unite the student body to our generous donors.  Students may choose to donate in either of the following ways: they may pull a tag that displays the age of a needy girl or boy from the Inner Court tree and bring in a toy or gift, or they may donate to one of the four boxes beneath the tree in the Inner Court. Please help donate to these worthy causes!

Looking forward-
