Student/Faculty Calendar for 2009-2010

Letter from the Principal

Dear Parents,

A big welcome to all of you as we begin the 2009-2010 school year!  Sophomore, junior and senior parents, welcome back!  Freshman parents, you and your daughters are now joining a great community.  Please know that you are a vibrant part of Carondelet High School.  I hope everyone enjoyed a great June and July, had the opportunity to relax and have fun, and that this newsletter finds you enjoying the last few days of summer with your family.

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet have four charisms, and our students experience a new charism each year.  This year’s is “All of which woman is capable”.  The focus will be woven in to all of our activities and events as well as in the school day. Your daughter should be able to find this focus in every aspect of school life.  Our student body officers and the leaders in the Spiritual Life Council have worked hard during the summer and planned opening activities for August as well as for the remainder of the school year.

The faculty wrapped up their school year in June with meetings and training.  They will be receiving additional training throughout the year so that they can begin to use a new educational tool, Curriculum Mapping, to help with continued curriculum improvement.  In addition, many teachers have attended summer classes and traveled to prepare themselves for this year’s students.  Many teachers have worked on and/or completed their Master’s degrees.  Congratulations to Ms. Hayner, Ms. Miller, and Mr. Kjera for persevering in their studies!  We applaud you on your accomplishment!

I would like to wish Mrs. Almonte and Mrs. Jensen all the best as they spend the first part of the year on maternity leave.  Mrs. Connie Tuft will be teaching Social Studies the first quarter for Mrs. Almonte, and Mrs. Marian Easthope will be teaching Spanish the first semester for Mrs. Jensen.  Mrs. Mary Weeks will be the new assistant to the Registrar.  Ms. Christina Ditzel will leave teaching English and moderating the yearbook to become more entrenched in the Technology Department.  Ms. Michelle Koski will assume the moderator's position for the Yearbook.  Mrs. Jen Reinwald will join the Religious Studies Department, teaching part-time.

This year, we will have a new school website in place.  Because of this, we have not included the school calendar with the student directory (you will receive the directory at Back to School Night). You will be able to keep current of daily happenings and the school schedule via our website.  Your daughter will receive her handbook during her orientation on Tuesday, August 18.  The handbook is a great reference tool.  Please take the time to review the information found there.  Additionally, your daughters are not required to wear their uniforms during Orientation.  Since they will have their school pictures taken that day, we ask that you remind them of appropriate clothes for school.

The faculty and staff are very excited about working with your daughters this school year. It is our intention to continue to engage, energize and empower the girls through their classes and activities. Carondelet High School is a special place and we are honored that your daughter has accepted the invitation to attend.  We want our students to have a rich and rewarding high school experience.

As we venture forward, in expectation and in apprehension, we pray for God's blessing and for the enthusing power of the Holy Spirit.

I look forward to seeing new and familiar faces really soon,

Teri Hurlbut, Ed. D.

Yes.  If you already have a Campus Account, you may sign up for the GameFly trial offer and receive a credit equal to the annual fee that you paid.

When will I receive credit for the annual fee I paid?

Your campus account will be credited the amount equal to the annual fee that you paid within 60 days of signing up for the GameFly trial offer.

What if I discontinue with the GameFly trial?

You will still receive a credit for your annual fee as long as you have given it a try for the 15 day period.

Carondelet does not endorse GameFly or any other merchant participant, however since this is a way to offset your Campus Account annual fee, we figured you would want you to know about it.   Whether you sign up for GameFly’s trial offer which offsets your Carondelet Campus Account annual fee or if you chose to pay the $35, time is running out.  The deadline to sign up for the Campus Account is August 31.

School Supplies

Please do not purchase school supplies prior to the start of school.  Pens, pencils and notebook paper will be adequate for the first day of school.  On the first days of school, teachers will explain what items are necessary for their particular course.

Deans' Corner

On Sunday, August 16 and Tuesday, August 18, students are to dress in appropriate attire.  Time will be spent in a classroom and pictures will be taken.   Because of these activities, students are required to follow the “Non-uniform dress" guidelines that are found in the Student Handbook.  Please note that shoulders must be covered at all times, midriff-baring apparel is not to be worn, clothes that are too tight too short or too revealing are not acceptable.  Disciplinary action may result for those students who do not follow these guidelines.

The Deans Top Fifteen List for the 2009-2010 school year.

  1. Shoes  - A description of the shoes is in the Student Handbook and on the CHS website.  Remember that shoes are always to be worn.  Students may never wear flip-flops or shoes without a heel strap.  If there is a foot injury, the student needs to wear one regular shoe on the one foot and a slipper on the injured foot.
  2. Parents, please refrain from using your cell phones on campus.  Please do not call/text your daughter on her cell phone during the day.  CHS has a NO cell phone use policy during school hours.  Phones will be taken to the Deans' Office and the parent will be notified.
  3. If your daughter is absent: 1.) please call the Attendance Office and 2.) follow this up with a note when your daughter returns to school. Both communications must be made.
  4. If your daughter is to leave campus, she must bring a written note to the Attendance Office at the beginning of the school day in order to receive a blue permit to leave.
  5. Pierced jewelry is allowed only in the ears.
  6. Shorts and skirts may be no more than 2 inches above the top of the knee cap.  Check your daughter's skirt as she may have grown over the summer and it may be too small and too short.
  7. Pictures will be taken during Orientation Day for their valid piece of identification and this requires a serious pose.
  8. When dropping off your daughter in the morning, please follow the directions of the traffic controller.  If your daughter is driving with you, please change places in the reserve parking area.
  9. Picking your daughter up after school:  Take the first available space so that your daughter can find you.  Do not double park in front of the school building. Please do not wait to pick up your daughter in the neighborhood.
  10. Before 8:15 a.m. there are no visitor parking spaces.  If you have  business with the school, please take care of this after 8:30 a.m. and park in the visitor parking spaces.  Do not park in any other space as these have been reserved.
  11. From Winton Drive, please do not turn left into the school. This blocks traffic for DLS when they are exiting.
  12. Detention is Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday after school for one half an hour and begins five minutes after the end of the last period of each day.  On Wednesdays, detention begins at 8:15 a.m. and is over at 8:45 a.m.
  13. Please talk to your daughter about driving on campus.  Carpools, loud music and talking on the cell phone is a disaster waiting to happen.  Please have her focus on her driving.
  14. Students who are tardy to class automatically receive a detention.
  15. Dress Uniform will take place every Wednesday.  Dress uniform is either uniform pants or skirt, a CHS white polo and the CHS sweater and black flats.
  16. The uniform pant is, Dickies Brand Welt Pocket Pant (no low rise), style # N882 in khaki or navy.  Seniors, may also wear the same style in black.

Hope you had a wonderful summer and that this year is a safe and healthy one for all of us.

Thanks for your support.

Visions of Christmas

Visions of Christmas 2009 – “The Message of Christmas”

The calendar still says summer, but it looks a lot like Christmas in the Special Events Office at Carondelet High School.

With seven holiday-themed events that begin just after the last turkey sandwich is consumed from Thanksgiving dinner, planning for Visions of Christmas 2009 is well underway.  If Visions is new to you, I know you will join me in awe and amazement when you see the transformation of the Garaventa Center from the school cafeteria into Christmas Wonderland.  If you have had an opportunity to attend one of the Visions events in the past, then you know that it takes many people to make this unique celebration a success.  If you have not attended an event before, believe me . . . it takes many people to make this unique celebration a success!

As you begin to mark your calendar with fall activities, please consider putting Visions at the top of your list.  As the largest single fundraising event of the school year, the success of Visions of Christmas depends on your involvement and enthusiasm.  We need all your talents and experiences to help make Visions of Christmas ’09 even more successful than last year.  Please join our team for this unique Holiday extravaganza.  All money raised goes directly to the school building fund.  Listed below are a few ways you can lend your support.

As a Parent:

We are asking each family to make a minimum $50 donation for the silent or live auction or for our infamous gourmet baskets.  You can do this by soliciting an item, donating a purchased item or a service, or with a cash donation.  Check the website for our “wish list” of items to help spark your imagination.  Also, we are registered at Macy’s, William Sonoma and Crate & Barrel.  Just go to each store website and look up “Carondelet Carondelet” in the registry.  How easy is that?!?

There are many opportunities for you to volunteer your time to get those PIP hours out of the way.  We have committee chair positions open as well as lots and lots of worker bee spots to fill.  We need parent volunteers to help solicit auction items, create gourmet baskets, work in the Boutique, decorate centerpieces and favors, make cookies, sandwiches and scones, as well as set-up and clean-up.  This year we have a special need for someone to play the piano during the teas.  Whether you like creative tasks, organizational tasks, or just like to be told what to put where, we have a job for you.

As an Underwriter:

Our goal is to have each of the seven events completely underwritten.  To do this, we need your help.  Please consider Visions 2009 Sponsorship opportunities for you and your workplace.  Many companies will match a donation given by an employee.  We are a 501 (c)3 Foundation.  Check to see if the company you work for participates in that type of program.  Sponsorship opportunities are listed on the CHS website.

We also need assistance in procuring interesting items for our auctions such as:

Vacation Homes or Condominiums                     Restaurant Gift Certificates

      Privately Hosted Dinners                                    Event Tickets

Signed Celebrity Memorabilia                             Private Jet Tours

Premium Wines                                                Hosting a Poker Party

      Fishing Trips                                                     Spring Training Weekend

      Super Bowl Excursion                                        Kayaking

Golf Packages                                                   Major League Game Tickets

COLLEGE PLANNING TIPS FOR SENIORS

The college selection process is about finding a match that best suits each student and her family. Entering senior year with a potential list of colleges does much to facilitate the process. To assist with the college application process, all seniors have accounts on Naviance, our online college search and planning resource. In preparation for college and scholarship applications and letters of recommendation, students should fill out the About Me sections on Naviance as well as the teacher recommendation and counselor supplement forms. Naviance access codes are available in the College & Career Center for students who have misplaced their registration information.

IMPORTANT FALL DATES FOR SENIORS AND THEIR PARENTS

This Fall Mrs. Breazeale and Mrs. Susich will be meeting with seniors in groups, in class meetings, and individually to help them with their post-Carondelet plans. Seniors and parents of seniors will also be invited to evening presentations on the college admissions process and on financial aid.

COLLEGE INFORMATIONAL EVENING FOR PARENTS OF SENIORS

The College and Career Center will be hosting an informational evening for parents of seniors on Thursday, October 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Garaventa Center.  Specifically, this workshop is intended to help parents navigate the senior year. Navigating the Senior Year is Carondelet’s multimedia presentation which will provide the most recent application and financial information from the Fall counselor conferences. We encourage all parents of seniors to attend. There will be an opportunity to ask questions.

COLLEGE APPLICATION WORKSHOPS FOR SENIORS

On October 14, while juniors and sophomores are testing, step-by-step online college application workshops will be conducted for seniors.  College Counselors will demonstrate the correct way to complete online applications for UC, CSU, and independent colleges.  To ensure accuracy, the counselors will supervise seniors as they enter information from their transcripts.  Entering incorrect information may prevent a student from being considered for admission.  On this same day, students may also attend essay workshops, thereby learning how to most accurately address the essay prompts and to distinguish themselves from other applicants.  Sign-ups for these workshops will be available in September.

ACT and sat Testing

Seniors should complete the required college entrance tests this fall. Almost all four-year colleges and universities require that students submit the official results of standardized tests if students are applying from high school. Please refer to the student planner and the CHS website to review registration information, dates, and deadlines for the upcoming ACT and SAT tests. Preparation for ACT and SAT tests is available to all seniors through their Naviance accounts / Method Test Prep.

COLLEGE PLANNING TIPS FOR JUNIORS

College planning and junior year seem to walk hand in hand.  Juniors can best prepare for learning beyond high school by engaging in their classes. It is most useful to begin the college process from the inside by focusing first on the student and exploring her learning style, her educational objectives, and her personality to discover what type of college environment will be the best match for her, rather than focusing on the external process which can be clouded by myths and rumor. This is a time when students and parents can take charge of the process of finding the best match by investigating the “personalities” of colleges, by visiting campuses, using the internet, and taking advantage of the resources in the College and Career Center.

In January, Mrs. Breazeale and Mrs. Susich will conduct two informational sessions for juniors and their parents to review the steps and timeline of the college application process and to interpret the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) results. PSAT results come with detailed feedback and information that students should use to prepare for spring SAT testing. Juniors are advised to register for spring ACT and SAT tests. Refer to the CHS website or student planner for dates, deadlines, and online registration information.

Robert Massa, Vice President of Enrollment at Dickson College, advises, “Answers to these three simple questions – how do you learn?; how do you interact?; and what are your educational goals - will help you understand yourself, and represent the first step in selecting the right set of colleges.” Juniors might consider the following questions:

·        How do I learn best? Am I an independent learner or do I need direction?

·        Do I prefer a structured or unstructured learning environment?

·        How do I interact with others? Am I an initiator or a follower?

·        What causes stress in my life and what results in enjoyment and productivity?

·        What are my general educational objectives? What do I enjoy learning about?

·        Am I more verbal, enjoying more subjective areas such as literature or history, or do I prefer the more quantitative “concrete” areas of study?

·        Am I more comfortable in a nurturing or a competitive environment?

·        Would I prefer a rural, suburban, or metropolitan environment?

·        Would I be more comfortable in a diverse or homogeneous environment?

PLAN Prep for Sophomores and PSAT PREP FOR JUNIORS

With an early 8:15 a.m. start on Wednesday, September 30, all juniors and all sophomores will receive their PSAT prep materials or PLAN materials. All juniors have been registered to take the PSAT at school on Wednesday, October 14, and all sophomores have been registered to take the PLAN test at school on Wednesday, October 14. Both the PSAT and PLAN will begin at 8:15 am and finish by 11:45 am. There will be no classes that day.

Welcome back, ladies….

MEET YOUR CLASS MODERATORS

A very big welcome to the incoming Class of 2013!

All of us at Carondelet are excited to be a part of this next phase of your life, and we hope you make many terrific memories during your years here.  Things start off with Orientation and don’t slow down after that!  I encourage you to take your academics seriously, but also find an extracurricular activity or sport so that you can connect with other students outside of the class-room; so many important friendships and skills are formed in this way.

One way to get involved is through the leadership program at Carondelet, as part of ASB, class council, or homeroom representative. These jobs are very fulfilling but require time, effort and  devotion.  You will be hearing more about elections in  the first few weeks of school in the announcements and class meetings.

These next four years will be filled with experiences you will keep forever.  Become involved, be open to new ideas,  take advantage of opportunities, and be ready to join the Carondelet community.

Again, welcome, and I look forward to working with you!

 Ms. Lisa Reddam

Freshman Class Moderator

 Welcome back, Class of 2012,

Sophomore Council cannot wait to get this school year under way with the Welcome Rally and Spirit Day.  Our council has plenty of energy and excitement for what is to come.  We are starting to plan for the 2009 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.  We will be walking in SF to support finding the cure for breast cancer and would love for you to join us.  Contact Soph Council for more information.

Ms. Lisa Reddam

Sophomore Class Moderator

Welcome Back, Juniors!

Congratulations on a successful sophomore year!  As you probably know, junior year promises to be academically challenging, but your council is in full gear planning fun activities to spice up the school year.  We are sure you are all looking forward to being upper-class women!

The Welcome Rally, Homecoming Dance, Junior Ring Ceremony and Junior Prom are just some of the exciting events you have to look forward to this year!  Junior Council is already busy planning Junior Ring Ceremony and working with De La Salle to provide a memorable Junior Prom.  We encourage you to get involved with any co-curricular activity in anyway you can and to contribute any opinions or ideas to your Junior Council!

Enjoy the rest of your summer and we look forward to seeing you in the fall!

Ms. Hayley Strandberg

Junior Class Moderator

Welcome Back, Seniors!

Welcome back one last time to the Class of 2010!  Congratulations on making it to the final stage of being a Cougar at Carondelet!  As seniors, it is definitely "your time now"!  I'm sure you are anticipating all the privileges that go along with being a senior, especially senior shirts, the Halloween Dance, and Senior Ball, just to name a few.  Make the most of your last year at CHS because the year will be over before you know it!
