History and uses
Magnesium was discovered in 1808
by Sir Humphrey Davey. The name originated from the name of the
city Magnesia and it is obtained from seawater.
Magnesium is an "anitstress" mineral because it is known
to skeletal and smooth muscles. It is also important in
preventing heart attacks. Magnesium alloy was utilized
as early as 1910 in Germany. Early structural uses of
magneisum alloys were in aircraft fuselages, engine
parts, and wheels. It is also used in jet-engine planes,
rockets and missles, luggage frames, portable power
tools, cameras, pryotechnics, especially incendiary
bombs, signals, and flares. Magnesium prevents corrosion
of iron and steel in pipelines and shipbottoms. It is
used in rocket and missle fuels. Another thing it is
used in is Milk of Magnesia.
