History:  Chromium was discovered in 1797 by the French scientist Louis-Nicholas Vauquelin. It’s name originated from the Greek word “chroma” meaning “color’, named for the many colored compounds known for chromium.

Chromium is used to:

· Harden steel

· Manufacture stainless steel

· Form many useful alloys

· Plating (hard, smooth surface, prevent corrosion)

· Jewelry (give glass an emerald green color)

· A catalyst

· Form bricks and shapes

· Medicine

· Dyes and pigments

· Tanning leather
