  • Cobalt can be found with the transitions metals in the periodic table.
  • It can be found in compounds containing Arsenic, Oxygen, Sulfur, and Nickle..
  • A man by the name of George Brandt discovered the element called Cobalt in 1735 in Sweden.  Cobalt is present in the human body in their blood, bones, the liver, and the muscles in the human body. It is also present in the Earth's crust, in the ocean water, in the atmosphere and it is also present in the sun. It is found in compounds with arsenic, oxygen and sulfur. There are Cobalt mines found in Zaire, Morocco, Sweden and Canada. It is used in magnets, ceramics and in special glasses. It is often used for electroplating to give certain objects a surface that resists oxidation, but more times than not it is used to form alloys.
  • The dangers of Cobalt are, if it is exposed to fire, the dust may ignite on contact with air or oxygen, an explosion can occur when finely dispersed particles from explosive mixtures in the air. There is a risk of fire or an explosion on contact with oxidants or acetylene. If you inhale cobalt, you begin to cough, you get a shortness of breath, sore throat, and you begin to wheeze.  If it gets into your eyes, your eyes become red, and you need to rinse with water for several minutes. If you eat cobalt, you begin to feel pain in your abdominal area, and you begin to vomit. If any of these incidents happen to you or someone you know, or anyone around you, make sure they seek medical attention immediately.
