Constructed from 1873 to 1881, the Humber Bridge spanned the Humber Estuary in England, which had been, for a long time, a barrier to trade and development between the two banks. Instead of building a tunnel (the cost would've been excessive), a suspension bridge was proposed. The Humber Bridge is the third longest suspension bridge in the world.
