The Brooklyn Bridge, built in 1883, was the first modern suspension bridge ever built. It took 14 years to build, and also took many lives (including the life of its creator). Its also ranked as the 42nd longest spanning suspension bridge in the world at 486 meters. Today, the Brooklyn Bridge is the second busiest bridge in New York City. One hundred forty-four thousand vehicles cross the bridge every day.
